Are you ready to go naff?

You know, when I wrote about all things ‘naff’ (read uncool, dorky etc for Americans) suddenly becoming ‘in’ on Fashion 156, I only had a slight inkling of it.  Things once reviled, getting resurrected is not something new.  But in recent times, it does seem to be a prevailing trend to take the supposed ‘ugly’ and wearing it either with pride or with the intention of making the ‘ugly’ look ‘pretty’.  The easiest thing to do would be to raid the vintage rails for the naffest things you can find.  Well some people have been gathering up all that naff and making a killing from it.  Zone 7 Vintage is about taking the stuff the twenty something generation probably grew up in and making it all relevant again.  Warning: If you’re a pretty vintage dressy kind of girly girl, this isn’t the type of vintage for you.  If you are however a lover of recent-throwbacks, neon and cartoon excess, then this would be the place to stock up on stuff that you might have to otherwise root through jumble sales for.   Currently, their stuff is available via their MySpace page (website is under construction), a further confirmation of their affiliation with the MySpace Gen/neo rave/club kids/Super Super reading tribe. I am by no means part of that tribe (ack…. somethings just pass me by!), but a little of this ‘naff’ would go a long way with my wardrobe.  Just a little, mind you.

  1. I tend to think us Americans translate “naff” as “irony”, which irritates me to no end. I do agree that a little bit, a tiny tiny bit, of naff could go a long way, if worn with sincerity…because sincerity never went out of style.
As for the Bill Cosby sweater, Just Say No! 🙂

  2. this hasn’t anything to do with the topic, but I saw your blog was mentioned in the H&M magazine, as one of the best fashion blogs on the internet. Thought you might want to know 😉

  3. JaHaute- I didn’t even know we had a Nu rave scene in the U.S. Maybe it’s just cuz we don’t have one in Minneapolis? I don’t know, I just thought it was mostly a European/Asian thing…

  4. all I can think of is Spike Lee’s “do the right thing”…
It all seems very ghetto-chic to me.

  5. Nice one, Susie…I shall be breaking out my blue, orange and yellow elephant-faced party mask to wear as a hat (which I haven’t had the guts to do so far) any day now. I really love it, but just couldn’t get over being laughed at.
