If I were a guy, I'd dress like this….

There are many stylish GQ type, sharp looking guys in London.  There are many indie boys who are all about skinny jeans and tight t-shirts with old school trainers.  However I don’t see that many truly eclectic male dressers, the male equivalents of so many girls in London.  For every ten such female dressers, there could be one guy that manages to not look like a style stereotype.  So it gives me great pleasure to introduce you to Matthew Josephs and his amazing style.  I noticed his style on The Fashion Spot and really admired the way he mixes things up and wears things that not many people would think could be pulled off.  He wears the skinny jean sillhouette incredibly well but manages to come off not looking generic.  So here is a week of Matthew’s style and a little Q&A with the guy himself.

What do you do:
I study BA womenswear fashion at Central St. Martins and I’m about to go into my second year.  I love everything about this school.  I model part time, I’m signed with FM; I do mostly magazine stuff because i’m kinda short though the runways i have done are so exciting.  I suppose I’m also a club kid as I’m always pictured drunk off my face in Super Super!

Describe your style:
I dunno – maybe eccentric?  I wouldnt really know how to describe my style in one snappy sentance; its always kind of English with the way I wear new things with my old favorites even if they don’t particularly match.  I would say it’s slightly feminine I suppose.  I liked the way the New York Dolls dressed in the 70’s.  I wanna look like that.

What are your favourite designers to wear/admire?
To wear i like Dior Homme because the clothes fit me right though i dont find them particularly interesting, they’re more like good quality basics.  I like to wear vintage stuff because no one else will have the same pieces.  I also like to wear Vivienne Westwood – her cut is so weird and the fabrics are so great – i get a lot of attention in her clothes.                                                 Designers i admire are Ann Demeulemeester because she always sticks to what she does and her cutting just blows me away.  Alber Elbaz for his take on femininity, Vivienne Westwood for just being her (who else can get away with wearing a pair of gold horns at Wimbledon???) and Preen because their clothes are so beautiful oh and i suppose I should put Hedi Slimane in there for his work at YSL and early Dior Homme collections.

How do you go about putting an outfit together (thought processes, etc)?
I suppose the music I’m listening to gets me in the mood.  Say if i’m listening to The Hellacopters i’ll wanna put on a Dior Luster or Strip look-a-like outfit because it fits the music or if i’m listening to classical music I’ll wanna wear something grand so usually i break out with the Vivienne Westwood.  So yeah, music and to some extent the runway influences me.

How do you rate your own dress sense in comparison to other guys?
I dress very feminine compared to most guys.  I’m kinda skinny and young looking so i can maybe pull it off?  I dunno – I like to push the boat out a little bit, get peoples heads turning (or get them whispering is that a guy or a girl?) LOL.

  1. so cool! what a find! he really has amazing style. i’m jealous that he has a grandma who owns vivienne westwood!!
susie, did you take the photos and everything? when’s your magazine coming out??? sign me up! 😉

  2. A particularly excellent idea for a blog post, Susie – nice one! Any chance it’ll be the start of a series?

  3. I respect that he has his own style… but I’m not really digging it, at all.

  4. i love monday’s, but all of his outfits are smashing. they’re so well put together, and the fit flatters his body type amazingly.

  5. perhaps you like his style because he dresses like a girl!! hahah. i think that guy is in the new Nylon book. I was thumbing thru it last night and saw him and was like “that girl has a really great jacket……oh god…thats a…guy??”

  6. What a ‘Cutie’!!! I especially love the skeleton outfit, although the monday one is a close second… we need more guys like that in the states too!!! Yes, please do more posts like this – very clever!

  7. Gosh, I would have sworn that dude was actually a chick!!! But, he looks great I think BECAUSE he is so feminine. He really manages to pull off what could look like some very contrived outfits, but he looks effortless, which is pretty hard to achieve when one is so ecclectic. Well done him!

  8. I love this idea susie, a great extension of the ‘what are you wearing thread’. Love his style, if only more guys dressed like him

  9. Yeah, I really love Friday’s outfit. That Vivienne Westwood jacket is *amazing*. He’s so lucky to have a grandma who actually owns stuff like that! And that skeleton brooch is so cute. I love how eclectic his style is, and he seems to pull it off effortlessly!

  10. Love his style and clothes! And awesome that his grandma has stuff from Vivienne Westwood!
I say: He is the Kate Moss of the guys :)!

  11. ooo I’ve wanted that Marjan P brooch for the longest time. *pouts* Now if only I could get my bf to dress like Matt.

  12. i love his style, but only because i’m a girl who wants to dress like that.
    i guess i relate.

  13. I’d be happy with life if all guys put thought into their sense of style like this. I only know about one or two who do, and i find it extremely attractive. I give this guy a pat on the back, and you as well, susie, for acknowleging him in your blog. From my viewpoint, i think why should females be the only ones who put time and care and effort into their style, whereas many guys don’t even have style? Guys should always take the extra effort to have and acknowlege creative style.

  14. He is kind of cute~=P quite like his style~don’t think i wll go out with him cause he is more like”Ji mui” type of guy =P haha~

  15. thanks for the nice comments
do i really look that much like a girl? maybe i should grow a beard or something?

  16. ohmygod. i absolutely LOVE his style.
i think its fabulous how he can use feminine style and clothing and still look so masculine.
i definetly admire his confidence. so many guys are afraid to stand out and end up looking like badly dressed sheep.

  17. i have to say w/ out that hair those outfits wouldn’t pull off as well. the hair is his safety net

  18. ive seen him in the tube in the far july and i couldnt take my eyes off this boy and then stalked him as he was on the stairs next to mines

  19. Wow I looked at the pictures for five minutes and acutally thought that this was a girl dressed up as a boy as the title says: IF I were a guy, I’d dress like this
    strange world

  20. i saw him in LET THEM EAT CAKE a while ago and ever since i have looking everywhere for some infomation on him, he’s really perfect.

  21. well, what can I say, I have met him a couple of times and he I got totally smitten by him. We had some chemistry going on for a while but I kind of blew it. I hope to see him succeed whith all his future peospects!! x
