Susie Goes Back to Basics

When I was sifting through the rails of Jens Laugesen at the Fashion East sample sale on Saturday, I came across a white shirt with slits at the shoulders and was reminded of a ‘boyfriend shirt’ outfit that I saw on the Facehunter a while ago.  Now surprisingly, I love this look (as does La Femme) precisely because it’s one of those effortless styles that I find very difficult to pull off.  It takes just as much bravada to throw on your boyfriend’s white shirt and a pair of skinny jeans, as layering away with odd combinations does (that would be me!).  It’s almost as if I hide underneath my complicated outfits and that I’m afraid to wear such a simple yet effective look.  So, I garnered up some courage, bought the Jens Laugesen shirt (for a mere £15!) and paired it with my skintight skinny skinny jeans and some flats.  Frankly, I don’t think I pull off the look half as well as the stylish girl in the picture but it’s not so scary after trying it on for size.

  1. i think the outfit really works on you. the slits at the arms give it that extra edge that seems to make it more “you,” if that makes sense!
    i am all for basics with a twist. something that gives an item personality, without the item wearing you (instead of you wearing the item). and with the belt slung low, it has the perfect proportions (almost golden ratio-esque).
    😀

  2. Non, non- you look fantastic! Love the slits in the shirt- GREAT detail… and the belt too.
    This look is definitely hard to pull off, however it looks so effortlessly cool when done properly, that it is worth an attempt.
    A++

  6. nice work. where do you find Jens Laugesen? i love the trousers and the shirt you’ve shown. are they still in stores in London?

  7. I also find it EXTREMELY difficult to wear outfits like these. as much as i love the simplicity and know how great it can look,every time i wear sumthing that simple, like a black shirtdress, i get the strangest feeling, maybe because it feels like i’ll blend in with every1 else. im working on it tho, so keep up the good work suse!

  8. Probably others have already told you this but…CONGRATULATIONS~! Like, on being featured in TeenVOGUE’s September as one of the four in the fashion blogs tidbit. When I was flipping through the magazine, I was like…”hey…this looks like something susiebubble would do” and then I had to look twice to confirm that it, indeed, was a screenshot of one of your posts.
    I’ve been keeping up with your blog for almost half a year now. Keep up the good work! ^___^

  9. this is a favourite look of mine. i think it is the cut of the shirt that makes it. some just hit the right spots. i have a vintage men’s Yves St Laurent white shirt that i like to wear like this. it is yum.
