September should have been a fantastic month for magazines with those big fat hefty issues. However, I was sorely disappointed by UK Vogue when I nabbed a copy this morning (I say nabbed, because literally in a few hours time, the shelves had cleared…they didn’t put Kate Moss on the cover for nothing). I may even end up preferring US Vogue this month because the Kirsten Dunst Cover has completely slayed me with it’s period pink frothiness.
However, the one editorial in the UK issue that really blew me away in this issue was the one featuring Katie Sketch, lead singer of Canadian band, The Organ (very The Cure/The Smiths/Joy Division-influenced- check out their MySpace for a feel of their stuff!). Katie says:
‘People are never sure if I’m a pretty boy or a boyish girl.’
Never a statement more true. Whenever magazines like Vogue or Elle (especially the US and UK versions) try and do ‘androgynous’ editorials, they never quite go there with their models, almost as if they are afraid to shed their femininity completely. All very well putting a long-haired pouty-lipped model in a slouchy trouser suit but it always looks sort of half-hearted.
So I’m glad Katie Sketch has embodied the word ‘androgyny’ perfectly. Her looks are so extreme and combined with the styling, it really has inspired me to take masculine dressing to a new level. It’s not just me though – even Marc Jacobs has decided to feature Katie in the new Marc by Marc Jacobs campaigns. For a mainstream publication like Vogue, this actually looks like an alienating editorial but I love that they finally decided to be that little bit braver.

Hey Susie! I’m a bit confused with the Vogue issue you mention with Kirsten Dunst…I was at Borders the day before yesterday and the Age issue with Linda Evangelista on the cover had just arrived…Are you sure the Kirsten Dunst one is the US edition?
yes dunst is one US edition for september.
during a festival here in halifax that the organ was playing, someone mistook me for a member of the band – to the point of claiming i was missing our interview, and taking my arm and leading me there. i mean i got away though! then when i watched them i kept trying to figure out who he thought i was – i still haven’t quite gotten it.
that’s a good ed, i like it.
That is a pretty boy. um I mean girl..
wow, what a cool editorial! she’d make a pretty hott boy.
wow, that’s so hot. My favorite is the one with the biker jacket, skinny jeans and high heels– what a perfect mix of James Dean and sex kitten!!
the pics are awesome.. somehow katie sketch reminds me of hilary swank in Boys Don’t Cry if you guys watched the movie before. loves her high cheekbones and haunting eyes!
You should come to Vancouver — Katie is obviously a dynamite girl, but there are lots of girls walking around these parts with that look stone down.
Those pics make her look simultaneously prettier and less hot than she looks in real life.
Wow, I really wouldn’t have guessed that is a girl if you hadn’t made it clear. After seeing the pic where she’s wearing heels I probably just would’ve been all confused over why Vogue was putting heels on boys. 😛
She looks hot too. I wonder if she gets many straight girls hitting on her, lol.
wow, katie is a good friend of mine from vancouver i used to do her hair, i live in sweden now and i just bought my sept vogue, and i was completely amazed at how my friend has a spread. this is perfect for her, she is as hot as she looks there despite the fact that ive never seen her in heels, her personality was captured perfectly. katie is the greatest hottest thing ever. i love you girl…xoxoxox
wow, love your blog! September’s Vogue was a real disappointment, but I was glad to find Nylon magazine with Ashley Olsen on the cover (can’t usually find imported mags where I live!), it was a denim themed issue, gotta love your skinnies!

Stumbled upon this editorial in the new Schön! magazine, a different take on androgyny using a male model, really fresh: http://www.nineteen74.com/magazine/all_issue.html
