When I saw this NYT piece on La Femme, I had to laugh because coincidentally, last weekend when I was out and about, I was rather alarmed at the levels of faux/real Marc Jacobs Stams on the streets. I can safely say, the vast majority of them were fake because they were in the most ridiculous colours – pale pink, silver, bright green???? A far cry from the original black, petrol (my favourite colour!) and taupe. The thing I don’t get is if they look blatantly fake, why buy it at all! Those fakes aren’t actually cheap and go for about £50. The more realistic fakes are even more pricy thanks to Ebay and it’s "100% Authentic Marc Jacobs Stam Bags w/ tags" listings. If it was me, I’d rather buy a non-designer quilted leather bag if that’s the look everyone is attracted to rather than splash out on a fake. I suppose the one good thing is that at least a fake Stam bag is not as horribly detestable as an authentic fringed denim LV logoed bag.
I would be embarrased having that bag, what a total fashion-victim bag.
i thought exactly the same thing. it just smacks of fashion victim. i’d rather get a high street bag in a different shape than bump into 30 other girls carrying ‘stam’ bags.
don’t their elbows hurt from carrying a bag that way?

i agree with you. I would rather buy something non-designer than splash on one that is a fake. Or if i really like the designer bag… save up for it.

I’m peeved by the latest “quilting” craze tho cus I’ve been saving up for a genuine Chanel bag since I was 14 and searched highs and lows for a quality vintage one but now the look is EVERYWHERE so hmm may have to invest my money elsewhere.
I think I might get a sturdy Vivienne Westwood bag even though it’s such a HK thing i love her trademark handbag shape.
Personally, I won’t ditch Chanel for Vivienne Westwood. Her bags are good but always go in sale. In contrast, Chanel bag is an investment piece.
I would take chanel over VW any day!! I feel sorry for the girls that bought the real one..
Get the Chanel!! It never dates – trends come and go but a Chanel bag is forever. This quilting obsession will fade and when it does you’ll regret being stuck with a VW bag when you could be carrying a gorgeous Chanel, quilted or not!
I concur with everyone here. I have 3 vintage Chanel bags and though I paid dearly for them, I get SO much wear out of them it’s unbelievable. I’m not so much of a bag person but a Chanel is a classic.
Vivienne Westwood does do a useful sized bag though. But if it was a toss-up, I’d go for the Chanel.

Not everyone can afford a 600 dollar bag, so what if you buy a good knock off? No one would be able to tell the difference, especially since replicas are getting better and better.
