These pictures were scanned from the latest Street magazine but it is something I have been eagle-eying for a while. British people are known for their humour, so much so that people have taken to wearing it on their sleeve. Many of you may be familiar with the term ‘chav’ (don’t ask me for a definition as there are many and you could write a thesis on the subject!) and it seems as much as they are a subject of derision, chav fashion has suddenly developed a cool fashion status. Goldie Lookin’ Chain, the novelty band who parody chavs started this chav irony and now I’ve seen some of the fashion crowd wearing gold chains, sovereign rings, 90’s shell suits, chav labels like Kappa, Adidas and Ellesse with pride. I think on one level it somehow works like the guy on the left and the guy in the middle pic but only if like them, you wear everything all at once, almost as if the excess of the chav look makes it work. Or like the girl on the right, you could inject small doses by wearing the bling, minus the blingy outfit. This is not a look I’m awfully keen on myself but it’s funny how fashion comes full circle and something that seemed so naff a year ago can suddenly seem cool again.

Chavs only wear what they were because they cannot afford other clothes. Stereotypical I know, this works because these people can pull it off they also team it up with different styles…such as the ‘nu rave’ style etc. They also where it all together which looks as if they’ve made more effort.
