Growing Old Stylishly

I always cringe when I go back to Hong Kong and see 40-50 year old women dressed up in tacky sequin jumpers, tight pink skinny jeans and the worst offense of all…….. clothes with cartoon motifs on them.  Ladies, it’s not right and it’s not clever!  As much as I approve of expression of style, I do believe that as I grow older, my taste will change accordingly and though I’m not ever going to a 180 and go super conservative, I think age-appropriate dressing wouldn’t go amiss.  So, I was delighted to snap this very cool lady in Antwerp.  She just looked so effortlessly stylish walking around.  You can’t see her bag but it was this really awesome leather satchel that had that deconstructed look.  I’d love to wear her outfit now let alone in 30 years time!

  1. I really like this lady’s style.
My mum has done a wonderful job letting her style evolve. In her youth she was really influenced by punk music, she had a shaved head for awhile (which she let grow out, thankfully) and wore skinny black pants, suspenders, lots of scarves, red lips. Then she went to art school in NY and worked for a seamstress sewing crazy stuff onto jackets. Soon after she started a tiny graphic design business (which wasn’t at all a success, sadly) and began to silkscreen and sew her own clothes. When she became a mother style took a back seat, but as I grew up she got more and more interested in it. Her style isn’t quite as crazy now, but I would definitely say it’s her own. On a typical day she might be wearing thrifted black oxford shoes that originated from a prison (they have the inmate # stamped on the bottom), cropped black trousers with robot printed socks peeking out and a red cotton kimono inspired jacket with a pile of her handmade jewelry. It’s kooky, but it works for her.
Sorry I just had to brag about my mum, I love her!

  2. Aw Claire that’s a nice thing to say about your mum! As I am now in my early thirties, I have sort of started to plan how I will dress in my older years, so as to still be fashionable, but somehow dress fitting for my age because I don’t know how much longer I can rock these skinny jeans!! But it’s true, style does naturally evolve as you get older. Whilst I love Susie’s fun, playful style, it is only appropriate for one so young – I couldn’t possibly get away with it, and wouldn’t want to as I would look ridiculous. Whilst I have no intention of suddenly wearing beige slacks, there is definately a sense of ‘appropriate’ dressing for one’s age, and its really about how you manipulate those boundaries.

  3. Hi, im Herbie from Brazil, and that’s what im dying to say for a few days now. I think you’r just briliant girl. I mean, you’re like the most inventive person that i’ve ever seen in the internet. You blog is just great. Im just envy that you live in london, and you have all this vintage stores, and nice thinks to see. It’s sad here, where i live. Thre’s no vintage. And if i say vintage to someone here, they go: Is that a wyne or something. Here, people dont know about fashion… Is it me, or its just sad?
