The other night, I caught Alfonso Cuaron’s modern day of adaptation of Great Expectations starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Ethan Hawke on TV. I remember this film getting panned all round probably because of the weak script but I actually rather loved it.
It has an amazing score by Patrick Doyle, and just the most lush cinematography. The consistent theme of the colour green running throughout the whole film is apt as Finn narrates at the beginning : ‘I’m going to tell this story how I remember it’ – and how he remembers it is with a whole lot of green. It’s in the costumes, in the Gulf itself (where its set at the beginning), in Nora Dinsmore’s dilapidated house, in every interior conceivable. This rewatching of the film inspired me to go very green.
**UPDATE** Not sure if you guys even care or in actual fact even, listen to Bubble Tunes (?) but I have just uploaded the fantastic Life in Mono by Mono which was the main theme from Great Expectations. Go on…relive that 1998 moment when like me, you were the only one who actually liked this movie.

I luuuurve the second outfit you have on.
The dress is v. v. v. v. cute!
Thank you! I liked this movie too! The soundtrack is also very good…i didn’t like it much at first, but it grew on me, and now i listen to it all the time!
I love the 3rd outfit with the white top and the 4th one, it’s so 60s retro which I really like. Wow you have a lot of green dresses!
I might try to find a copy of that movie because of you. I remember watching it when I was younger and not quite fully understanding what it was about LOL!
Green must be a theme throughout Alfonso Cuaron’s work because green is definitely the main color in “A Little Princess.” On the special features of the DVD it said that green was chosen because it is the only color that can be cool or warm, depending on the lighting.
Sasha, I forgot about A Little Princess being directed by Cuaron! Thanks for the info – there definitely was a shade of green to suit every ambiance in the film.
Nadia: Don’t expect to be floored by the script but I think it’s a very underrated adaptation with wonderful performances from Anne Bancroft and Robert de Niro. Do check it out!
One of my favourite movies ♥ Thanks for reminding me
i remember falling in love with the cinematogeaphy the first time i watched this movie. lush is definitely the right word for it. i will forever love watching this movie b/c it makes everything seem so beautiful. and regardless of waht anyone else has to say, i can’t help but gush over it.
Susie – no problem! I just watched the movie a few days ago, so it was fresh on my mind!
PS – I love the second and fifth dresses! Do you know what brands they are?
I love this movie…its so haunting. I lived in Soho at the time it came out and I remember being just around the corner from the Asian restaurant they filmed in where she gets up and leaves with Finn and getting a waft of romantic vibes everytime I went down that street.
Sasha…completely missed your comment until now!
The 2nd dress is by Catherine Malandrino.
The 5th dress is by TS Boutique…got it ages ago!
Orchide: Lucky you….
