Stillness in Hong Kong

If you have read my About Me page, you’ll know I hail from Hong Kong – city of lights, the Fragrant Harbour, ex-British colony, gourmet and shoppers’ paradise etc, etc.  I love Hong Kong to bits but the city is so hectic and fast-paced in a way that NYC and London could never be because of the workaholic attitude out there and the scramble to amass as much as wealth as possible.  The number of sky scrapers and high rise (I’m talking properly HIGH!) can make the city feel very claustrophobic, with the added humidity not helping things.  Sometimes when I just stop in the middle of Causeway Bay (one of the busiest shopping district in HK), I can just feel the city and its people blurring around me in a speeding mass.  For example, my view from my window is literally the picture on the left – there really is no escaping from the city.

It’s no wonder that many restuarants, new shopping malls and apartment lobbies all have stark white interiors (even though white is considered a sign of death out there) – because it really is soothing to the eye.  Thus I end up wearing a lot of white when I’m out there.  The way I dress needs to reflect my need for calm, for a time to take a step back from the chaotic lights and just breathe.

Marks & Spencer Shirt, Boudicca silk dress w/ large pleated hem // Vintage white nylon oversized jacket, Sophia Kokosalaki white pleated skirt

Vivienne Westwood Gold Label cotton corset dress // Vintage puffball dress, H&M white long sleeved t-shirt, vintage white crepe t-shirt over, old white leather converse worn throughout.

  1. Yeah, I’m Korean and Seoul is like that too –busy, hectic, people milling, cars refusing to stop for you (oops! sorry, ran you over). The white color is calming (though yes, white=death in Asia) and does allow someone to collect herself. I love that Vivienne Westwood dress!!

  2. thank you Susie for sharing a bit about HK with us…for me, having never been, and living in sprawled out Los Angeles, it seems magical:)
