Daisy Draws

Daisyshoe I first noticed Daisy de Villeneuve‘s illustrations when I bought a pair of Topshop boots and on the shoebox were these very distinctive felt-tip drawings.  They don’t look particularly skillful but they have this blunt, to-the-point quality about them that I found really endearing.  The deliberately left in felt tip marks and the strange slanted eyes, it’s almost not very pretty to look at but oh so fun!

She does come from venerable fashion stock though, her mother Jan being one of the biggest models in the 60’s and her father being Justin de Villeneuve, famous for discovering Twiggy.  I got one of her books I Told You So for Christmas and really loved it – it’s like an illustrated humourous depiction of relationships.

I also love these drawings on lined paper.  All the girls she depicts always remind me of someone I know or maybe something that I’ve felt before – especially because she adds sad captions like

‘Can I kiss you?’ she said’

It would be better if we didn’t he said

‘Why not?’ she said

‘It would be better if we didn’t’ he said

However, if you’re not a fan of this uber naive style of illustration, then her fashion editorial work is a whole lot cuter and more subtle.  These are from a 2003 issue of Vogue I think.  This combination of illustration and photography has given me some more blog fashion spread ideas!  I love all the cute girl imagery too – it’s like French new wave chick, Holly Golightly and Amelie all rolled into one.
