Trianglar Love

Lately, my interest in menswear labels has grown significantly out of sympathy really. Every vaguely fashion conscious guy will complain about the over-saturation in womenswear leaving little scope for variation in menswear.  You only have to look at the Topman 1 floor vs. Topshop 3 floor equation to see that.  A guy with unique or interesting style will hit me with more impact simply because they are few and far between and because I know the choice is limited.  There seems to be a few boxed up niches that designers cover for guys.  The artfully simple understated (Margiela, Raf Simons).  The crazed cartoon (Bernhard Willhelm, Cassette Playa).  The lux sporty (Kim Jones, Aitor Throup).  The skinny chic and sleek (Dior Homme).  Then of course you can augment with sartorially elegant and old fashioned with Savile Row and vintage.

Enter a look that’s not widely adopted by guys.  Enter ‘unique and crafty’.  Enter Ioannis Dimitrousis.  Hailing from Greece and having graduated from LCF in 2005 in menswear, he has shown at LFW and now presents his collections in Paris.  For his AW07-8 collection, he has taken his fascination with a triangle in an envelope to detailed heights.  Shapes and colours aside, there is everything going on without going overboard.  You have pleating, beading, hand-crafted crochet techniques and a mixture of textures with wool, silk and cotton.  Though these patchwork techniques are something that Dimitrousis has always excelled at, for next season in particular, I’m really up for this modern ‘hand-crafted’ look that isn’t themed to be ‘folksy’ but couples a well-judged balance of textures and colours with contemporary-cut clothes.  Like the patchwork with the jeans and the boxy cut jacket.  I know I’m a greedy-pig who is hogging a guy’s turf but I’d love those sweaters or scarfs for myself.  If it’s all a little ‘too much’ with the amount of triangles (and a lot of guys I know will say that at first glance), it’s about picking out one of Dimitrousis’ pieces for impact.  I’m all for seeing mix and match collisions between designers like Dimitrousis with more minimal pieces from the likes of Dior Homme.  Who else is up for it?

  1. Finally!!!
A menswear post! That reads a lot more insolent than I had intended…:P
Seriously though, thanks for addressing the serious gaping VOID in menswear today and letting people in on this glorious little find. The jacket, 2nd down on the right is just jaggedly-cut, asymetrical splendour!

  2. This is fierce!!. Arty clothes but not too outrageous. i love it. Dior Homme would look brilliant with this, the sensible cuts would look superb with the assymetrical beauty of those jackets…i can feel my money flying out of my wallet already. xx

  3. Got to get me some of those triangles..
And yeh… it saddens me every days.. but hey, things are changing slowly, every year we see a rise in interest to men’s fashion.

  4. i have to say that i like the look in “fashion -way”. And it would be cool to see how it looks on a real person.

  5. Thanks for posting this Bubble. I would like to see your interest in menswear grow significantly in this blog.

  6. I love it! But then again, I have loved triangles since birth. And also the mix of black and colors, reminds me of the abstract art of the late 80s. Hope we get to see more of this kind of experimenting in menswear you can accually get your hands on 🙂 Love you for writing this post!

  7. how is this boring???
i think this is fun.. but can still be pulled off in a beautiful sophisticated style.
I’m a girl but love wearing men’s clothes.. especially tailored pieces because you get a completely different fit from what you would find in women’s clothes. So yes susie, I think you should definately delve into menswear.. especially if it’s as special and wonderful as this!
I must say though…. that male model has an enviable figure . He would look just as good in a dress…!

  8. wow you wear mens clothes, how original
its boring because its like every other “indie” designer out there – its nothing new

  9. ioannisdimitrousis has brilliant clothes…!!they are so unique and so original…so great!!!!! i own one piece from each of his collections..looking forward to get my hands on that collection!!
    Nastazio…

  10. I love this kind of style with these “alive” colors which makes it so unbelievable unique ,in combination with the geometrical patterns he uses.I think he’s great!!!!

  11. Finally a designer pushing the boundaries within Mens fashion. Just what the industry needs in a climate where fads are being re-invented. Is the UK, in particular, ready for the Trianglar Love of Dimitrousis? …only time will tell. The vast majority wouldn’t have the courage to wear Dimitrousis to what would otherwise be considered as non-comforming and that’s exactly the point. I’ll be watching very closely.

  12. these clothes are outrageous. its too wild for my taste…everything is patched together in all different colors. 🙁
