Remember that bit in Devil Wears Prada when Miranda Priestley gives a devastatingly acerbic comeback about the origins of Andie’s cerulean blue sweater? If you don’t, click to the left for a reminder. Anyhow, I’m wondering whether the same pattern will happen for the colour mustard. At least, for my own benefit. As I was going out last night and coming up the stairs from Tottenham Court Road tube station, voices behind me loudly exclaimed
‘I would never in a million years wear mustard.’
‘Really, but it’s all over the place in the shops.’
‘No never…’
Then as I was walking down New Oxford Street. A drunken male voice slurred ‘What the hell is going on with those gold tights?!’
Of course, all of this going on behind me was due to the H&M mustard yellow/gold ribbed tights I was wearing as shown to the right.
Now, for a colour that has been lingering around for around three seasons in some shape or form, and has also filtered down into the high street, it’s still getting a bit of slack. So what will it take to get mustard, a colour that seems so ordinary to me when I’m in fashion la-la-land but unfortunately is the colour equivalent of haggis to everyone else (i.e. always to be avoided…. though I’m a secret lover of haggis too…), into the acceptable, everyday, dull-as-dishwater colour palette? So that I can at the very least I can walk the streets without voices behind me.

I am most definitely an advocate of mustard. It’s such a warm, heady colour and flatters a multitude of skin tones.
Peeeecha to those who knock it.
I can’t stand the people who make comments so loudly that you can obviously hear, and everyone around can hear them too. the response from metallic leggings was immense! better than blending in though…
I totally agree with Selina. But often when people talks shit I just turn around and laugh right in their faces.
I think mustard is a really nice colour, especially on clothes.
Wtf? Mustard’s a great colour! My second favourite pair of socks are mustard ones from Uniqlo.
heya thought I’d pop in and just ask if you’ve read the book ‘Alligators, Old Mink & New Money’ by Alison Houtte??
I just picked it randomly yesterday cus I was bored but it’s really delightful.
Thought you might enjoy it as the descriptions by the author of all the vinatge clothes in her life are wonderful and fills the mind with pictures.
Lol i’ve totally gone ga-ga and you’ve prob read it already and disliked it!
what’s the rest of the outfit? is that a.. corset? dress? heh the mustard tights remind me of sir andrew aguecheek in shakespeare’s “twelfth night”. that’s a compliment… though it might not be considered so by most, hmm.
i like mustard a lot, its hard to find mustard items in shops and even secondhand, which bothers me very much. i wish i had more mustard in my wardrobe, but i just cant seem to find good mustard stuff.

that’s so funny, just today I went out wearing mustard/bright yellow tights and of course I was given funny looks but no one actually said anything… some people are so weird. I think the tights look great
i love the colour it is warm and safe.
I just hate when people comment at the streets about what you’re wearing. I mean really, it can’t bother them that much, can it?
juliet xxx
tht top looks very cute, but the ribbed stockings r weird i think
It depends on the mustard and how they wear it, but I think those tights look divine on you, especially with that outfit. It’s the one-piece from a few entries ago, isn’t it?
Next time someone comments on your outfit loudly enough that you can hear it, turn around with a snappy comeback. <3
I have been playing with the mustard color a while now. My new purse is mustard. I have a few dresses and tops. I like the tights in this color thought. I only have some AA leggings.
haha this may be a little off track but today whilst putting things outside at the shop i work in, this little girl, about 4 maybe exclaimed “what is she wearing!” and pointed at me…i laughed and started to walk back in to the shop then i heard her say “i love it!”..it made me smile
very cute! I dont own anything in mustard, and now I have a burning desire to go buy something…
i love the mustard coloured tights..who cares what others say.. you have your own unique indiviual style that no one can re create and in my eyes that’s great! You carry on wearing ur mustard and stand out from the crowd! lol xx
I can’t really do yellow myself. Mustard and blue work together on many people, though I’d be unsure about mustard on its own.
My vote for the works-on-everyone colour is burgundy.
I’ve always admired the Prada mustard socks. I have yet to get a pair and will totally rock them with or without the voices behind me:D
Go ‘The not-caring about people’s reactions!’ team! Go!
Mustard isn’t for everyone but it doesn’t seem as strange to me as it does to others….
Sammi: I have not and I will make a point of picking it up now!
Shez: I’m wearing that vintage swimsuit I bought in Stockholm over a stripy top, a Topshop blue silk miniskirt layered over a yellow satin one and of course the tights and some canvas strappy sandals I bought also in Stockholm…
The clip you showed from The Devil Wears Prada was posted by me on Youtube. I actually used it for a project dicussing fads and trends in American culture!
Anyway, I love mustard yellow, but I think recently I have fallen in love with a more goldenrod yellow color (like Jcrew’s “sunflower” yellow). Keep rockin’ those mustard yellow tights, actually all colored tights for that matter.
those tights are great! too bad about the negative people behind you. argh!!!!
mustard’s not only a tried-and-true colour, it’s a classic (think of old men’s suiting; and as the result of a natural dye, it’s been around for millennia). new trends will always catch flak, but i wouldn’t have thought something so grandly traditional as mustard would be among them….
i love this color and absolutely love your tights! you know better than anyone it doesn’t matter what they say. i think mustard is an interesting neutral and also looks different but classic when paired with burgundy red.
I too love mustard. yellow and its varieties are my favourite colours… and people who make snide remarks about the clothes people wear in the street just have way too much time on their hands. I LOVE THOSE TIGHTS SUSIE!
x
OMG, I can not belive people who does not know or succumbs to the yellow/mustartd trend still exists?!?!! HOLY CRAP, those people are too retarded…. I am already considering takign a break from them. I once wore mustard footless tights with a grey dress, and a guy in my class stood at them and frowned. blah
Some people are scared to wear anything but black, blue, green and brown. And they can’t get over the fact that there are people out there whose color sense is a tab bit more daring.
Deep down they’re just jealous.
I love your outfit susie! That bathingsuit is just so lovely (and flexible!)
omg susie, no joke, I was THISCLOSE to buying those very same mustard tights at H&M last week. But then I decided against it when I realized I probably could never pull them off.
Yeah, I’m very lame.
Anyway, I don’t get those comments from those people on the street. I think mustard is a great color and it looks lovely on you.
I LOVE mustard. I am meaning to buy some tights like yours, but I have a pair similar (the colour’s a bit more canary, though).
I also think it’s funny when people comment so loudly like that. I have these stripey trousers which make people comment behind me, even though I don’t see much different about them.
I love looking at stuff and admiring it in shops, then having randomers come up and totally diss it. Like with metallic leggings a couple of months ago, I was contemplating buying them and these two girls came up behind me going “Omigod, what freak would wear these? Look like moon pants!…” et cetera. It was great!
i saw an opi ad featuring yellow nail polish in one of my mags the other day that made me think of this post. have you seen this color? i found a link online with a picture: http://www.aveyou.com/browseproducts/OPI-Need-Sunglasses–Nail-Lacquer.html
the color is called “need sunglasses?”
🙂 D
Hey!
I’m wearing a mustard top right now!
Anddd, yes, it has been around for the last few seasons.
I remember it being quite an ordinary sight on the High Street in October…
