Recyling Ruffles for Ruffs

kapowruffs.jpg

Just to prove that no one can RUFF-fle my feathers, when a random commentor left a string of nasty comments on quite an old crusty post (why do that if noone is reading the post… pointless?  Yes…) that went along the lines of ‘That’s so ugly and so are you!’, it reminded me that yes, I must take another look at neck ruffs again.  The Kapow Wow neck ruffs that Claire from Enchant and Doom used in the Roisin Murphy video that I so love are now available online at No-One, except a few are sold out… I’m hoping it’s the Roisin Murphy effect that did it because that would prove that ’nuff people love her as much as I do…

Kapowruffs

However, as much as I’m a lazy bum and yes Kapow Wow have done a good job on their ruffs, they sort of gave away their secrets by revealing that their ruffs are made out of vintage petticoat skirts.  With the cat out of the bag, it’s hard to fork over ¬£60 for their efforts.  Shameful, I know….

So now, to get the desired colour combos and the right amount of volume that I want in a ruff, I’m now looking to DIY options with the skirts on eBay/Etsy or from Rokit (though grossly overpriced they do have a big colour selection…) or Beyond Retro.  I’m thinking two or three pastels intersected with each other with mucho layers…

It might be that I’ll come crawling back with my NOT so ruffly tail between my legs and go for the Kapow Wow creations but we shall see…

  1. Well what a nasty girl, she’s probably just jealous and she can’t spell!!
The ruffles look gorgeous, good luck with the new DIY project.

  2. ooo interesting, who would have thought it! there must be a million things you could do with these skirts, maybe frilly cuffs too or those little ankle cuffs

  3. what a horrible girl! she can’t even spell well enough to insult you and is definitely just jealous!
the ruff idea is great, and all the colours of the petticoats are divine!!

  4. I love ruffles, the ones you posted are gorgeous 🙂
Don’t worry about the awful poster, you are successful and have lots of blog lovers, someone just obviously has too much time on their hands 😉

  5. Those nasty comments are so sad they are laughable (easy to say, though, when not on the receiving end) and there’s nothing like (repeated) spelling errors to undermine one’s ‘argument’.
Love the spirit of the ruffs, like little pieces of joy!

  6. Bith??? She seems to struggle with technolgy and spelling (from the number of posts) and I am not quite sure why people feel the need or right to post stuff like that on someone else’s blog.
However, I love the intro to ruffles – not sure they are me, but look forward to seeing your efforts.

  7. As has been said already what a silly incomprehensible little girl, we all know that you rock undeniably. Can’t wait to see another susie diy, if anyone can pull this off it’s you.

  8. I’ve been looking at these both in the shop and online. They are pretty amazing. Didn’t even know they’d been used in a Roisin Murphy video.
They actually seem quite easy to make now too. Could be a possible DIY project when I finally free up some time for such things.

  9. “Ugly Bith”…LOL.
May indulge in a bit of copycat-ing. Planning to do a Pierrot Falls Down the Rabbit Hole type shoot so may get artsy craftsy and make ruffles. Let’s swap ruffle notes 🙂

  10. There are some very strange people out there who have nothing better to do than to wander around the blogosphere insulting people.
I’m not so keen on the ruffles myself but my, those netted skirts are so awesome. Every time I see them at Beyond Retro I want to buy one but have no idea whether I would ever wear it!

  11. I’m intrigued by ruffs, though I’ve never attempted wearing one…
There is a special place in hell for people who leave pointless, cruel comments.

  12. I just love ruffs. I have be toying with the idea of making one or trying to track one down over the past few months as I am dying to get my neck into one!

  13. Ha ha I love your nasty commenters. They are so hilarious! Good idea on the whole neck ruff thing… should look into that again.

  14. You know, I was recently reading an interview in which you said that it sometimes got you down, all the negative comments you get sometimes. I know people have told you before but I think it’s worth saying again:
There will always be haters. That’s just how it is. Haters are haters. And they will hate because that’s just what they do. It has nothing to do with you. You’re not ugly or fat (in fact I find you very pretty and charming.) The issue here is jealously. Once upon a time these haters had dreams, desires, and aspirations…and they didn’t go through, and now they’re bitter about it. And now all they can think of doing is hating on you because you have what they wanted. Don’t take it personal. In fact, you should be proud you have haters. It means you’re doing something right. So keep on doing what makes you happy and let the haters do what they do.

  15. dear susie
i hope you never let those haters get you down.
to me you are so perfectly imperfect. i love your aesthetic and love the way you wear your heart on your blog 🙂
to me you exist in a league of your own. i love that your blog is not about fashion but style, which makes all the difference. especially since youre not afraid to share your amazing personal style with the rest of us plebs.
okay that is the end of my love letter to susie.

  16. I love the way you’re making lemonade out of lemons. The neckruffs are gorge. I think alternative neck-jewelry from different fabrics is lovely.

  17. Hey, thanks for the links and the idea! When I was about 7 years old, I got a bright red petticoat from an aunt (adult-sized) which I used for playing dress-up all the time (usually as a dress). Too bad I got rid of it, but it probably was covered in paint and grass stains anyway.
Now I’m coveting a bright coloured petticoat again…

  18. i just went “ooo.. ruffles!” as soon as i saw the pix. just goes to show how simple i can be sometimes lol. and wtf was wrong with that crazy woman who couldn’t spell. i hate haters… 😐

  19. ….well, that was weird….
but, anyway, I LOVE those ruffled skirts, I think you posted the mesh ones before and I went crazy finding them on eBay- only to talk myself out of bidding because, seriously when will I wear them? I did get one skirt, but just re-sold it today- for a 2 pound profit- YAY!
