A different sort of gladiator…

finsk20legs1.jpg

My eyelids are a little heavy.  The fatigue has come on.  They’re squinting because yes, the summer uniform of London is official.  It is the leather jacket over ruffled floral print dress/skirt and gladiator sandal combo.  Walking about in Camden on Sunday which is a pretty generic reflection of London style, I think I counted about 20 girls working numerous variations of this uniform… I was even tempted to go about documenting this in an Exactitudes sort of way…

The surprise hit of the season considering the fact that glardiator sandals are not exactly the easiest items to wear and when they come about every summer, they never really quite took off until this year when shoe retailers have provided about a gazillion ways of presenting the gladiator shape, making it a doodle to pick a pair no matter what your style is, in a similar way to what happened to flat buckled pirate boots a few years ago…

So naturally, despite my liking for the gladiator shoe, it’s no wonder that the fatigue has set in. However, Finsk’s interpretation of the gladiator shape (available at Poste Mistress) is sure to snap me out of the heavy-eyelid action. It’s an alternative vision of the gladiator with the Finsk qualities like the purple wooden heel and the unique colour palette.  It also conveniently goes well with faded neons as demonstrated here…. going hand in hand with my love for that particular spectrum of colours that veers between pastel and neon…

  1. My only problem with the gladiator sandal is that the lady short of leg looks a bit wrong with them on. Tis a shame! 🙁

  2. I normally like the combination of leather jacket, flowered dress and gladiator sandals, but if everyone is wearing it… it’s a bit boring.
by the way, i have added a lot of things to my last post, and yay it’s cool that you like my walkman. i have a lot of cassettes, but i have even more cds, and recently my collection has increased by 30 cds. (see post ;-))

  3. so true about the london uniform.
i like gladiators too but have always resisted buying anything to gladiator-y because they’ve just been so god damn ubiquitous over the past couple of summers.
that is a beautiful shoe though. definitely my favourite colour for summer footwear.

  4. Yeah, I’m with you on gladiator fatigue. I felt kind of sad when I got mine- totally messed up, right?-I guess because that whole desire for something is almost half the pleasure of it for me. and I’m def not going to wear a bright floral maxi dress (I’m too short, dress too overpowering for my little frame).
These are nice- I could totally see you rocking these!

  5. I moved to London about three months ago, and live quite close to Camden. The very thing I first noticed about Camden style (I think we were still on the spring uniform then) was how generic it is. Back then it was skinny jeans, calf-high leather boots, top and leather jacket. I haven’t noticed the introduction of the floral dress but hopefully that is because I have become immune to the common style of Camden.

  6. Fashion Fatigue or Look Fatigue is an annoying little sigh every so often but these things happen. I feel the same about leggings – oh look there goes another dress/skirt with leggings (and leather hjacket, scarf adn galdiator sandals!)It will pass….

  8. ahh poste mistress… i was in london when it opened, and it was soo my favorite!
i do love this design… it’s really feminine, and as i’m really aching for gladiators, i’m afraid to invest in a pair… not sure why.

  9. I am a bit ambiguous about anything ankle-strappy, not being very tall and ankle straps tending to have a stumpifying effect but these are lovely. Though I’m also very tempted by the Lacroix lego-heeled gladiators on LaRedoute you blogged about weeks ago and I think I may purchase!

  10. Ha ha I know what you mean but I want it known that not all us camden ladies are so unimaginative!

  11. Seriously, is it even possible for Finsk to make a shoe I don’t like?! No, I don’t think it is. I’m not totally “off” gladiators quite yet, but I’m definitely more conscious of what I wear them with lately. I like to pair them with vintage dresses and corduroy shorts. But not at once 😉

  12. gosh i got bored of the floral print/leather jacket combo last year! let alone a repeat performance this year…
    tho i do love gladiator-everything-shoes-sandals! 😉 x

  13. Gah, I so understand the fashion fatigue. I’ll be interested to see if it’s similar here once the weather warms up. I haven’t noticed too many leather jackets yet but give it time…
