Despairing of Repairing

Right that's it…. Platform21 in Amsterdam have kicked me right up the arse on the repairing stuff front with their Repair Manifesto that coincides with their Repair It Yourself Project.

Moreover, for me it's more of a Fixy-Uppy Yourself Project as opposed to straight forward repairing…

-Pink leopard print skirt (not has horrid/rancid as that reads…) that needs fiddling around with to make it less ruffly and um… Girls Aloud-esque…

-Old jeans that I need to incorporate some sort of neat/precise cut-out panels in to full bring back to life.

-Boots that need the heels painted.

-T-shirts need to be cuffed and trimmed with something fancy round the necklines.

-An old wool coat needs to be cut-up to make an oversized waistcoat for belting up.

The list goes on and on…

Note the number of tone of necessity littered through the post… and note how none of the list involves PHYSICAL mending… the list below was just a fervent reminder of what needs yanking out and made over…

  1. I just adore this take on mending – especially the idea that repair can be a creative challenge. What a fantastic way to look at an activity that is so often deemed a chore!

  2. Do you get that creeping feeling that everyone is on the “shut up and just be happy during the recession” bandwagon? Not you, though, thank god. xo

  3. This inspires me to tackle that pile of things that needs a button reattached or a slight alterations. Also um…handwashing. It’s taking over my life.

  4. Okay, I alter/repair stuff all the time (not DIY, I can’t waste my time doing bad work when there are experts) but this manifesto makes me laugh. The serious tone!

  5. Very true, repairing things is definitely a practical, creative solution that should be applied. Recession or not. Thanks for sharing!

  6. oh i love this post! especially the second point of the manifesto makes so much sense! It motivates to sew all the buttons that fall off my clothes back on them…i always collect them so that i can sew them back on…

  7. i can join this trail… too many things, so little time…!!! i blame the weather, the sun definitely promotes good DIYing

  8. I just realized how stupid my comment was; the phone was ringing when I wrote it, and I swear it sounded a lot better in my head. Proof reading is essential.

  9. I think repairing things and keeping on it is a great idea. I can’t sew at all, but my husband does (thank the heavens) so I make him do all the clothing repairs. He just repaired my grey silk pencil skirt that I can now wear for winter. I still have a huge pile of clothes that need fixing, so I’m thinking of taking a sewing class so I can learn how to fix them myself. If you really love an item of clothing (or accessory) you should do something with it instead of leaving it around or throwing it away.

  10. jus5 curios aout how ur going to paint the boot i have shoes in a similar state

  11. We all know Apple is entirely incapable of following this guide.
It would mean loss of profits for them, even though it would save us from their toxic junk ending up in the landfill just a year after purchase.
