Oh Elle-ry

>>I guess it might have seemed slightly odd to be tweeting about Ellery so much.  I’d be lying if I didn’t say I have some pre-conceived favourites marked out on the RAFW schedule, going by previous collections which I’ve either written about here or come across via Dazed.  Of course I’m checking out as much as I possibly can but mid-week, and having done some preview of the collection, it turns out those favourites are going to remain… well… my favourites, Ellery being one of them.  Loving Ellery is a conflicted affair.  I don’t have that raw sexiness that a lot of Ellery collections and the ensuing lookbook images embody.  Actually… I’m looking at the Ellery girl like I am with an aching ponderous “What if….?”

That said, I’ve got no beef with my own shortfalls.  I may not be that Ellery girl but I’l get starry-eyed looking at her all the same…

Before the show yesterday, I got a last minute sneak peek in the lair of Kym Ellery…

…were Bardot-esque hair and “fi-errrrce” adorn the walls…

 

… as well as her astrology-inspired sketches for her S/S 10-11 collection, the show collection… which is actually the second drop for S/S 10-11…

Kym’s helpers were busy busy hand embroidering and my magpie radar was turned on by meallic threads in the ripped tweed, clusters of sequins that looked deliberately texterised as opposed to just purely shiny and silver foil applied to leather…

 

 

My favourite texture of all though was this destroyed silk that looked like moss…

Most of the shoes were customised with more gold leafing and speckled crystal-like clusterings…

And the show and resulting collection?  Well first, I would like to apologise to Ellery and co. for being a complete camera dumbass.  It was only after the show that my friends pointed out what I could do to take FAR better pictures.  These DON’T do the collection justice at all and better ones can be found here.  Secondly, I was never sold on Balmain’s foray into flaring but somehow Ellery’s versions that moved amazingly well looked tremendous especially the ripped tweed version that looked like they had a properly post-seventies life of their own.  Actually ‘flare’ informed the spirit of most of the clothes, from the swingy skater skirts to the cut-out shirt sleeves that trailed behind the shoulders to the cocoon capes with that moss-like texture as well as the feather additions.  This was by far the most texture-rich collection that I’ve seen at Ellery and probably thus-far at RAFW which probably stems from the fact that S/S 10-11 collections aren’t normally texture-heavy.  Incidentally, I definitely need to ask someone why autumn winter collections are never officially presented down here…?

No doubt, Kym will shoot a flood of amazing images with this collection and I’ll surely revisit again, pondering my shortfalls once again…

**EDIT** I blatantly and stupidly ignored the bit that is supposedly most relevant to bloggers… the show was streamed last night and the razzle dazzle shoes and sunnies are now available to buy straight away from The Grand Social – a pretty good way of selling showpieces that won’t go into production!  Meanwhile, I’m browsing previous collections still wondering whether pieces such as leather saddle trousers and copper armed leather jackets need to be in my life…
