The Dust has Settled Down

>> It's another time warp moment!  I'm actually back in sunny sunny Sydney, eating lush food in Surry Hills and scoping out all kinds of neat designers.

Ok, no not really… though I am desperate to go back for RAFW next year as well as do a few days in Melbourne beforehand.  I'll hopefully try and magically make it happen.  Anyhow though, another down under revisiting.  I wrote about ManiaMania in my round up of jewellery designers that took lunar journeys.  For their latest collection, they've gone back down to earth but not in a pragmatic sense.  The collection veers back and forth between the iconography of ancient Egypt and a young David Bowie – his depicition as a Sphinx in 1969, a ring hitting his eye (hence the colour the change), aspects of Labrynth and lyrics from the song Rebel, Rebel.  So many facets of Bowie jammed into a collection are of course most welcome in any manifestation.  That the collection results in literal pieces such as the Labyrinth tri-ring emulating the crystal ball and the Escher-like stair case in the film makes it all the more fun to link up the references to Bowie and his fascination with Egyptology.  I had a fabby time trying the pieces on when I was in Sydney especially the tri-ring that could well take out an eye and turn it a different colour (preferably from brown to purple in my case… one brown, one PURPLE eye…).  I also love doing that thing where load up your fingers with rings just for the sake of numerous rings being there…

Once again, Maniamania excel with their lookbook images (photography by Stephen Ward) and I believe an accompanying film by Fiona McGee is on its way to the website…

  1. Rebel Rebel is actually my favourite Bowie song! Those pieces look SUPER weighty, though- I wonder what they’re like to wear?

  2. such a beautiful shade of nail polish? please tell which brand!

  3. I’m bound to feel an affinity towards anything influenced by young Bowie! The Egyptian aesthetic is quite trendy and saturated at the moment but I still like it, the blocky rings in this collection are fantastic.

  4. I am in love with all of the accessories! They are so unique and so fabulous! Such statement pieces without being over the top. Great post!
