You Can’t Eat an Elephant in a Day

I got completely blown away by Suno's Mac/Milk 'proper' debut last season that I had to post about it immediately.  Alright, it's not immediate here but I swear I did fall asleep mid-image-processing last night, going through Suno's S/S 11 images and thinking "Want, want, want… buy, buy, buy…".  The title of the post refers to some of the sayings that were printed on some of the dresses, taken from the original kanga fabrics from Kenya – one of them, translated literally means "You can't eat an elephant in a day" – I'd question first a) why you want to even attempt to eat an elephant in a day anyway… and b) to get to the metaphor of the saying, Suno's steady and successful upward trajectory definitely doesn't need to be done in a day if they continue to keep charming the pants/knickers off people with their adept mix of prints and clothes that are unapologetically joyful.

Moving away from being locked into a "Hey we love all things Africana…" mould, Suno have instead steered their clothes to being about creating a fine mix that manages to integrate… oh I dunno… I'd say at least 30 different fabrics/textures into a collection – a mix that is facilitated by production and artisinal factories still instilled in Kenya.  There's a faint whiff of that country which started the whole shebang but it's tempered with a playfulness that doesn't need a country of origin attached to it.  Cutesy and bountifully pretty clothes don't have nationalities.  On a lower end of the scale, even the new ASOS Africa range has moved away from fabrics that SHOUT Africa and instead concentrate on the fact that production is done there and instead goes down a subtler route (get ye hands on biker jacket now…).

Anyhow, I kick off my sole-designer fashion week posts with Suno because I'm ready to go head first and be plunged into their skilled mix of fabrics and prints, one that I personally relate to with my own print fest of a wardrobe and I think marks a strong step-up in Suno's path of elephant-eating…

May have found the swimsuit that I'll be semi-content with given my err…body that rejects 99.9% of styles…

Or the triangle bikini…in Sugar magazine back in the day, they always told me peeps with small baps should wear this style, a mantra that I of course still carry in the back of my head.

Of course, the final word are the shoes which are a collaboration with Loeffler Randall, and they will be exclusive to Opening Ceremony as well as LR's e-store.  Which wedge, which wedge… the final profound question to end on of course…

  2. I love how she mixes patterns, colors but collection still gives a powdery/ muted feeling – very spring like. (Or you have just chose to show softer outfits? :)) Anyway – love Suno! 🙂

  4. Oh my, I share the exact same sentiments with you Susie! On second thought, perhaps not considering the fact that I feel like buying EVERYTHING! Haha I would wear everything pictured here as well 🙂 And I vote for the red/white wedges simply because they appear to be the most challenging pair – stylistically speaking. 😉
    Good day!

  5. Wow so beautiful.I haven’t posted in awhile but I have been reading your blog since ’06 (wowza) and I allllwayssss come back. Of all the style/fashion blogs out there yours is simply the best…the most inspiring, the most beautiful and the most fun!!!! Don’t ever change!!!! xoxox

  6. Joyous indeed! What a lovely collection! That first swimsuit is simply stunning. The perpetual hunt for the perfect swimsuit may have ended . . . or at least, the end is in sight. Now I just need to get my paws on the thing. As for which wedge, I think I’d have to go with the pink and blue floral.

  7. great post. thanks so much. speaking of fabulous, colorful, africana-ish prints, were you able see julian louie collection? if you have any closeups of the print shoes there(which are apparently a collab with aldo), i’d love to see those!
