Glittery Shorty

People who know me would not associate the word ‘slutty’ or ‘sexy’ with me with regards to my nature and also in the way I dress.  So when I do wear something a little risque, something that on another person, those s words (slutty/sexy) might come up, on me, it just draws a blank and a bit of a question mark.  Like, people don’t expect me to dress that way so when I do, it has an odd effect.  Which is fine by me as seeing as I don’t ever act remotely ‘slutty’ or feel at all ‘sexy’, attributing those things to my outfit would seem a little wrong.

So for most people a pair of sequin hotpants would set those alarm bells going yet for me, I feel safe in the knowledge that I’ll still come up un-sexy and unscathed.  Of course, there are those wishing to do the Chanel SS07 thing with some black sequin high waisted, shorty short shorts, in which case these Patricia Field ones might be a better choice.  Buying black sequin shorts on that high fashion basis could be a way of justification for some.  The Topshop ones that I bought are unfortunately not styled like 40’s bathing suits a la Chanel but are low slung and denim based.  Yes Jordan/Jodie Marsh attire here I come.  I’m not sure what made me fork over the money.  It could have been the magpie attraction to the shiny black but perhaps, some small part of me was trying to look around my head and say ‘Look does a sexy Susie exist????’.  Yet, even looking at these pictures, I do think…’Gosh…I look distinctly UN-sexy.’  I’ll call that a blessing…

I went for Roisin Murphy-esque all over sequins.  I seem to be obsessed with textured/shiny black and whilst I’m looking to shine in other materials (pvc mosaic squares? perspex circles?), black sequins seem to be the most accessible way to work the shiny black.  The weather can still afford a bit of bare leg but obviously, soon the opaques will come into action and the distinctly ‘un-sexy’ effect will be increased even more than before.  Guess that is all for the best….

(Does this post sound like a longing to look ‘sexy’ plea?  Yes…oh dear…how tragic….)

  1. I do love this outfit.
it reminds me, in the best way possible, of one of those button men from london. the ones covered in buttons.
personally,i wouldnt have the guts to wear it.
but on you, it looks flamboyant, not slutty.

  2. I’ve been looking for these for ages!!
Of course you do them ultimate justice through your own style by making them look edgy and more electro queen than sexy. How about teaming them with the swin suit you wear under skirts sometimes (I think you got it in europe?)

  3. I want sparkle shorts! actually, i really want big sparkle pants to wear under one of my shorter dresses so when i lose it when dancing i don’t embarass myself QUITE as much.
p.s. annah, they’re called pearly kings but i LOVE the term ‘button men’.

  4. These come across “VEGAS” ie excess and lots of sequins, not the overly sexed that you think. Especially because you wore trainers.

  5. That look is spot on. Not ‘traditionally’ sexy but who wants to look like that anyway? Better that you go your own way (as you do). Digging the hair also!

  6. You know. I love it.
I’m not sure which shoes I prefer. The Keds are like, hello, Not Sexy here! But the heels, with their demure taupe, are sort of like, yep, I’m a heel, but I’m still Not Sexy. In fact, as a heel, I’m just teasing you into thinking their is some sex appeal when–hah–there is not.
Can you tell how outrageously tired and hormonally Unfunny (capitalized like its cousins Not Sexy) I am.

  7. Well Bubble, if you feel sexy, you’ll be sexy. I’d say the shorts are a good start.

  8. Hi!!
Ive been reading ur blog for a while but ive never commented, so anyways i love your unique sense of style!! you inspire me to try new and more out there things!
and i like the shorts! especially with the tennis shoes!

  9. Haha, I saw them here and immediately bought them off the website! They should be winging their way to me any day soon. How exciting!
You look absolutely amazing in them!
I look to be creating very casual, slouchy looks with them, to take away from any slutty connotations.

  10. Eli: Well… I was thinking if someone with a pert ass and cleavage wore the shorts (like a Jordan), me thinks you would see the slutty effect…
Thanks for all the love for the glittery shorts… thank goodness that no SEXY vibes are getting out there but thanks anyway if you got that vibe…
EJ: How crazy does your dancing get?! Will have to ask S…
Buttonsandstars: Yup, slouchy and casual is the way to go…
Raq: The top isn’t silver. It’s a cream sleeveless t-shirt by Jens Laugesen.

  11. I’m feeling pretty chuffed because I wore the exact same shorts and exact same white tennis shoes to reading festival, so I know it was a good decision because if it’s on Susie, then it’s cool.
I’m kinda worried though because I didn’t think the shorts where slutty at all when I bought them, I just thought “Ooo shorts, I need shorts, Ooo sparkley, I need these”
Thankfully peoples comments here are positive, but someone did say to me “Are those sequin shorts? They’re pretty racy” But i’ll just consider it a compiment, because they’re damn good shorts.

  12. Wow,
I certainly wish I could wear shorts like those and look amazing (not slutty). I wore a pair of regular shorts with TIGHTS yesterday and my parents wouln’t stop frowning.
I do think there’s a difference between sexy and slutty, though. sexy+chic can go together, slutty can’t and is more on the desperate side. So susie, hope this doesn’t upset you but I say this outfit falls on the sexy+chic category. =) and it looks goood.

  13. Nope, not sexy… But you sure look hot! Me, I like to buy sexy, party-type clothes and dress them down for everyday use and if I ever get an outfit together this fab I’ll be one happy lady. One happy lady in sequins.

  14. I love the shorts they look amazing on, and I adore the jacket to match 🙂 If people are refering to this as slutty well all I can say is not everyone can pull it off like you and there are alot of green eyed monsters who have such negative comments out there (just ignore).
    anyway
    loving your blogs x
