I was hungering after the SS08 collection Emilio de la Morena after their stunning AW07-8 collection which is receiving lots of high-profile coverage. I didn’t make it in time to the presentation but the images proved to be a bit of a shock. A completely different direction for them. Less about structure and more about a play with materials and in particular, patchwork. I’m not the world’s greatest fan of patchwork. I feel like whenever I try wearing it, whatever patchwork garment it is that I’m wearing is making a mockery out of me. It’s the sort of thing where I don’t want people to think ‘Oh dear….she thinks she looks CUTE and child-like doesn’t she?’ especially when I rarely want to look cute or childlike.
So I’m surprised that after a few page views that I’m liking Emilio’s carefully curved patchwork, using it as a way of contouring the body whilst retaining that ramshackle quality of supposedly mismatched fabrics (of course nothing is random here…. the similar shades of blue, the pairing of blue and plum. The collection does however strike me as something that I may want to recreate on my own which is not something I thought when I saw their impossibly skilled and well-crafted AW07-8 collection, which I’m never sure is a good or a bad thing…

I LOVE Emilio’s work and was really excited when he was telling me what he planned to do for this collection. I absolutely adored his A/W07 collection, as it was so skillful as you said. He has kept his techniques but just pushed them further (whilst making them more accessible oddly enough). He does his own thing and I love him for that. His colours are always so fearless too.
My favorite is the one on the far right, I like the through line of the stripey fabric running from shoulder to hem. It seems the most – organized – of all of these selections.
I can totally see you reinterpreting some of those patchwork ideas with some nice, fabric weight papers in different patterns. Paper’s easier to sew than fabric anyways.
Oh, I wasn’t familiar with his work, but judging from this post, I think I’m going to love it!
I’d love to see your version of it too.
I always discover something new in your blog!
Now, I’m going to look for more of this collection. 🙂
doesnt that look very balenciaga by nicholas ghesquière circa 2001?
and wasn’t ghesquière just ripping off kaisik wong?
The word patchwork always reminds me of those quilted ..err quilts for some reason. You know those quilts that have all those little poofy squares sewn together? Anyway, I love the very last one …if only I had legs like that though.. *sighs*
My lecturer on friday was talking about collective thought..
which is funny. Because I was just thinking about patchwork for clothing too.. and then here comes your blog with a full collection already.
Now it doesn’t feel so good.
damn
but it looks really cool here anyway.
