The late 90’s to early noughties may be characterised as the era of the non-supermodel – as in nameless, unrecognisable faces with a high turnover. Moreover, there have not been that many models whose presence in the public has been so significant that people would go out of their way to emulate them and therefore, they earn the title of ‘style icon’. Kate Moss just about qualifies hence the success of her range for Topshop (despite my protestations of dubious quality and negligent design apparently Topshop have raked it in…). So I’m was a little perturbed to wake up and find out that Topshop have been in talks with Agyness Deyn to collaborate and for Deyn to go down the route of Miss Moss, to produce a joint collection.
Many a question floats into the mind really. Sure, Deyn has had a bout of sudden success both on the catwalks, in campaigns and has apparently been named as one of Evening Standard’s 1000 most influential people in London fashion (where she ranks I have no idea…). But outside of our fashion-focused, magazine-obsessed bubbles, in the wider public, how well known is Agyness Deyn? Has she reached household name status? Is she getting to the point whereby Heat/Now magazine are dedicating ‘Steal Her Look’ pages to her (let’s face it, once you have that sort of press, it’s pretty much a surefire win for Topshop…). Or are Topshop aiming to target the collection at the very fashion-savvy who do know about all things-Deyn? In which case, would we (the supposedly fashion savvy…) fork over the money to get a bit of the Agyness Deyn look. I think not…
Weeding through her public appearance pictures, by all means, she dresses well. A little eclectic, fresh and very age appropriate. However, nothing is exactly awe-inspiring, and I suspect that designer freebies help her along the way a lot. Her persona and stance seem to light up the outfits more than the outfit itself. I can’t say I’m a connoisseur of model’s personal style but I can think of at least five others whose styles intrigue me more.
Quirky Agyness // Classic Agyness // Sleek & Sharp Agyness
As the number of high-street-designer collaborations are rising and the hype is slowly dying down for each one progressively, have we reached a saturation point for them? If so, then if this collaboration between Deyn and Topshop comes into fruition, how will it fare?

woah!
i just wanted to post an issue about agyness myself
i just love her style and she’s also a really great model!

That’s why I said LATE 90’s…. like circa 1999 to the present day… the waif era…
you¬¥re right… the era of the non-supermodel hasn¬¥t finished yet.. i don¬¥t know but i don¬¥t like all those anorexic nameless faces.
i think i wouldn´t buy any of the topshop/deyn clothes, cause, i dunno, people think sort of everyone who´s famous is automatically talented at designing clothes, which in my opinion is not the case!

I don’t really get the whole Agyness thing.
I suspect we’ll see stripes, some stripes, maybe a few stripes, biker boots thrown in for good measure and braces. Oh, and a hat.
I think Topshop already have a lot Agyness Deyn ‘style’ clothes anyway. So personally I don’t expect anything new or exciting.
I do not get what people see in this girl, she’s a typical club kid and the way she makes exagerated poses everytime she sees a camera, it’s just irritating. I do not think it’s interesting at all. It looks like she dresses with mish mash of stuff you can find in topshop on the sale racks. There is no logic at all for this collaboration.
bolg interesting!!!
Is it me or is Topshop getting un petit peu desperate?
i mean, yes agyness deyn dresses fairly well but i agree that topshop already sells alot in the same vein so i cant see that there would be much of a difference were she to release a line.
Also, maybe i should move with the times but she seems so recent! and belonging to such a specific field without much overlap to appeal to the ‘everyday’ woman.Kate moss is at least something of a household name.
i predict the general consensus to be…’why is the girl with the name i can’t produce trying to make me dress like her!!!’
I am a big fan of Agyness. She reminds me of my #1 favorite model Linda Evangelista. I first noticed Agyness outside a fashion show earlier this year. Some photographers were taking pictures of the models as they straggle out after the show and she was the one who leaped into the air to pose. I thought, finally, someone who understands the show business aspect of all of this.
Susie, do tell – who are the models you think have style? (mind you, I might not even know who they are, but I am curious!)
urgh, please. topshop, go away!!!
Yes, Agnes is very wonderful and dresses well. but, surely anyone who knows anything about fashion, or wants to look like her, can figure it out for themselves? and go to a charity, or “vintage” shop and get it themselves.
without looking like bloody clones.
Yes annah!exactly! its like now people need help carefully putting together the ‘casually slung on’ look. its ridiculous.
i also agree with djm, which models would you say have real style, enough to credit their own line, susie?
I have an irrational dislike of Agyness, possibly because of the way she spells her name, but more likely because I can’t see her appeal. I never think something looks better having been on her, and her epression ranges from bored to mildly confused.
If this is what bleached bangs can get you, I’ve been going in the wrong direction with my hair.
She’s not super well known and definitely not a household name. The reason she’s elevated to “style icon” status is because of her personality. She is seen at the right places, and she’s got this look to her that makes people curious. I think clothes make only part of the person, there’s the whole attitude/aura thing as well…
well… i agree that NOT every model can be a designer. i think it would be better if none of them did! they should do their thing on the catwalk ’till they’re 30 and then go rest!
however, i think that agyness’ collection will be more interesting then the two collections kate produced. kate really did disappoint me! how boring was that?!? so i guess it will be easy to top it.
i also think that the world has had a moss-overdose. just think of “kate taking drugs…oh,not taking drugs anymore… engaged with pete… or still taking drugs…hating sienna…hating pete…loving pete…still hating sienna… not loving pete anymore…”!
so why not give a young interesting party-it-girl-model a chance?
Just thought I’d let you know (if you haven’t found them already) that Topshop now have those sequin jeans in store – the ones you were asking about a couple of weeks ago. Or they were there on Monday anyway, along with sequin leggings, skirts, tops, tunics – total overload, and I love it all!
I think the models getting younger (in order to be skinnier) thing is what’s led to the parade of nameless faces & the decline of the super. Hard to be captivated by a 14 year old: they’ve not lived enough to be truly captivating shoot after shoot. And maybe the fashionable bug-type faces lend themselves mainly to a very blank facial expression, which likewise doesn’t make the individual model stick in people’s memories…
The idea of models designing doesn’t completely put me off but I object to clothes simply having a spokesperson to front them – e.g. Kate Moss just going through a rail and saying things like ‘I like that one!’.
I can’t really say any models deserve their own clothing line unless there are latent designers waiting to bloom amongst models (which quite often happens…Loulou de la Falaise, Ines des Fressanges….).
But in terms of model off-duty style I admire…
Valentine Fillol Cordier (eclectic and quite varied), Iekeliene Stange (one of the few that truly stand out and has a unique voice), Sasha P (slouchy by perfectly so..)
I’ve also seen Georgia Frost looking wonderful all on her own.
hey. i just noticed that my old blog´s on yr euroblog list. coo, thanx. too bad we didn´t get to talk to eachother that much when you were visiting us at the modette-office.take care.

A little something “new” would be nice. IMHO, Agyness has a cute tomboyish look on her that could inspire a new kind of line.
rid kate moss,support agyness deyn.
when you say age appropriate do you mean 18, 21, or 24? (her real age) if 24…i would say she does NOT dress her age.
Ok, I agree that she’s very cute, but I think I’ve had way too much of her already. I don’t know – since when have models become arbiters of taste? Shouldn’t we leave that to the designers, except in very rare cases? I mean it’s pretty easy to look hot when you get tons of free clothes!! 😉

Well, we don’t know what the collaboration consists of yet do we? In the link it says something about ‘signature looks’ which as has been pointed out here, TopShop already probably sells (eg stripes). But nothing is concrete yet, maybe they’ll do a different take. Wasn’t there talk of Agyness and Henry Holland doing a jewellery collaboration? Maybe they’ll get Agyness to do some styling? Who knows, but I think TopShop are cleverer than we give them credit for. (Er, dunno why I’m defending them actually, just putting another spin on it I guess.)
She’s a wonderful model. The perfect face expression… The perfect shape… The perfect walk! No model ever appealed to me so much before.
its interesting you say about now/heat because a couple of weeks ago, when i was bored flicking through one of the heat style gossip mags (maybe ‘closer’ or in fact ‘now’)
it had a page on agyness’ style. even the sun newspaper had a double page spread on her the other week, so i think yes, maybe she is making her way onto the publics conscious.
I am so not interested in A.D. The whole uber-presence of her bores me to no end.
Maybe she’s just not my cup of tea, but the whole spectacle and the fact that you can’t get away from her, well… like I said.
her look can be average but her hair has already become quite iconic,a nd I love her new hair do!
Oh, Topshop, yawwn.
Kate Moss has been in the public eye for over 15 years, and Agyness, well, she’s still relatively “underground” when it comes to being well known.
Topshop, you’re meant to be ahead of the game, and original and fresh, so get over all this tedious collaboration-ness PLEASE.

She’s got:
• The foot stance
• That tired platinum hair.
That’s it.
Agneyss’s style is less than inspiring, she either works the boombok shoreditch etc… look or, like susie said, works the I have an amazing body and free designer dresses look. Neither of which will ever be awful, but neither of which require any sense of personal style. She doesn’t even sit at the top end of either of those categories, in fact I think most of her outfits fall in the staid shoreditch types rather than the creative.
And yes, this is nothing to do with her style and I’m just being a cow but although I don’t get her appeal, I get why Armani gets her appeal. It’s because (IMO) she looks like a male Armani model from the late 80s/90s. Rant over, hah!
