Please bear with me whilst I spark up a month of travel enquries, meddling, planning and brain-picking. I’ll first deliver the news before I get to my sneaky bit. Pop-up stores are something that give me encouragement to trek out to a particular place to see something because I’m one of those sad and tragic people that don’t like to feel that I’ve missed out even if it did turn out to be a bit crap.
Den, the extension of New York menswear boutique Odin is a concept space that showcases one particular designer for a period of time offering products that are limited, exclusive and all the rest of it. In the past they have featured Rag & Bone and Cheap Monday but starting from the beginning of February, Karen Walker will be taking over this space for three months. So why the reportage on a bit of news that most savvy New Yorkers will know anyway?
(The Cheap Monday takeover at Den…)
It gave me a sneaky (or not so sneaky as it turns out…) opportunity to also say that from the 1st to the 7th Feb, I will be tripping it to New York to a) take my boyf out of Europe for the very first time and b) to put it bluntly, shop like mad, explore like crazy and eat like a pig. The week coinciding with New York Fashion Week doesn’t mean I’ll be attending any shows (NYFW is something of a mystery to me and I’d be scared to even try and navigate…) but it probably does mean the city will be buzzing in a certain way. So, in not so many words, I guess I’m trying to shamefully ask for shop recommendations and the like. I’m pretty steady when it comes to the obvious places (Opening Ceremony, Seven New York, Screaming Mimi’s etc….) but outside of that, and outside of Manhattan, I haven’t a clue.
Anyhow, I AM genuinely interested to see Karen Walker’s curated space if it resonates with her delightfully designed website. Apologies for the sneaky news and brain-picking all in one.

Too bad you couldn’t pop up to Montreal while you’re in North America. Have fun regardless!
Maybe try to spend some time in Brooklyn?
http://www.refinery29.com has some great store guides, you could spend a good amount of time browsing through the site getting ideas.
as for vintage shops : atomic passion, amarcord, resurrection (expensive but fun to window shop)
regular retail: oak, i heart (definitely), steven alan
custom millinery: barbara feinman (just went here and i loved it.)
i’m super excited for you – let me know if you need a tour guide 😉
you should do a 1/2 day in williamsburg broklyn…
and shop: oak, in god we trust, jumelle, beacon’s closet, built by wendy, amarcord, sodafine, about glamour… and more that you will just stumble upon. (it would be helpful to print out a map beforehand, things are pretty spread out).
and eat: cafe 1980, diner, marlow and sons, or aurora.
hope you have a great time.

my favorite store when i lived in nyc was “i heart”:
http://www.iheartnyc.com/
they are a small basement level boutique that carries labels like eley kishimoto, sonia rykiel, lover, mooka kinney, and a bunch more (their site has a more comprehensive list).
“dinosaur designs” (australian homewares and jewelry) is on the same street, if you’re into that sort of thing.
feel free to email me if you want more recommendations, i’m happy to give them. 🙂
university news (multiple locations) for walls of fashion magazines, and kinokuniya for racks of japanese fashion magazines and lookbooks.
the boutique is so beautiful! i love that spider-like lamp
Have a great time in New York, Susie! But you have cause to be excited..Karen Walker’s clothes are great.
YES, definitely Oak in Williamsburg, I Heart in Nolita, Patricia Field on the Bowery, and Reed Space in LES.
Scoop is absolutely amazing and to eat definitely go to pinkberry!!!!
xxxx
OoOO, I love Karen Walker’s style…
Missed you by a month!
Went into Den and bought a Cheap Monday anorak – the store is tiny, as is Odin next store, and the staff is a little…odd, but the clothes are very nice. Make sure the boyf brings thousands of dollars – Odin ain’t cheap.
You should come to New Zealand for some authentic Karen Walker! Not because it’s not elsewhere, it’s because it all started from here, from NZ 😀 They have a VIP sale tomorrow and I’m going!!!
It warms my kiwi heart to know you love Karen Walker too!. I only have one piece and I adore it, its a boatneck brown velvet dress from before she was famous :o)
I’m going to New York for the first time this spring so I can’t wait to find out your favorite stores to visit!!
Yay for New Zealand fashion!
.. one thing, that link did not take me to Karen Walker’s website
Xx LOVE IT
Sweetpea – I live a couple of blocks from Den. Would you like to meet for an East Village coffee somewhere fun? Email me, address on blog. (You must promise not to divulge my identity tho!) LLG xx
You have to go to Williamsburg and explore all the boutiques. I went there in my last week in New York and I had already run out of money but I wish I went when I had money, it was so hard to say no to some beautiful dresses and skirts. I dont know if you have been to NY before, but if you havent another good place to go is Century 21…its mostly crap but after 1 hour of serious hunting I found a pair of marc jacobs shoes I wanted for only $100, and for some reason when I bought it I got a free Kenneth Cole handbag (sshhh dont tell my sister it was free)..its the best place for designer bargains…I think that there is more than 1 store, and the 1 opposite the world trade centre site (the 1 I went to) gets too picked over but the other one wherever it is less well known by “fashion tourists”… Anyway you will have a great time!
You must go to Linda Dresner and IF boutique since you love avante so much- if you need anything or suggestions while you are in New York email me and ill help you navigate.

Don’t be surprised when the invitations start flooding in, after all you were named the second most influential fashion blog for 07!
I was a little disappointed with NY. It was a wee bit casual for my taste. I should mention that NY came hot on the heels of Paris, Rome, Milan, and London so I wasn’t absorbing everything!
Have a great time and I’ll email you a list of great out of the way stores.
Susie! NYMag has a good list of boutiques with addresses and descriptions and so does Refinery29.
That’s so awesome that you will be in NY!
ps – your boyfriend should check out Atelier!
Definitely look at New York Magazine and Topbutton.com for sample sale listings before you arrive. For accessories, check out Auto in the Meatpacking District and Hannah Clark in the East Village. Also there are two indie designer markets in/near Soho: Market NYC and Edge Noho. Have fun!
A trip to NY sounds exciting! I can’t wait to read about what you saw, bought, and did. I hope you and your bf enjoy the vacation!
Yeah you would love Jumelle, Oak and Amarcord in Brooklynn and i heart in the Lower East Side. And make sure you take your bf to BBlessing (also in the LES), that store is great.
Jelouse!
You guys have spoilt me and my boyf with shop recommendations and now I will be definitely broke after this trip…. but I giving you all a big *muah* anyways because if I’ve spent my money on some treasures…
I love KW’s eyewear, fantastic pieces.

Like alot of people have said, I Heart (on Mott just south of Houston), and also Geminola (Perry around 7th) which does charming dresses with vintage materials and Resurrection vintage which relatively is close to I Heart and Seven. Have a charming trip.
Yay go the kiwis!!!
I only have two karen walker pieces, though I love her to bits, a black sheer top which I picked up at an opshop for $5 (they don’t know their designers), and the runaway girl necklace which I got for my 18th birthday.
Ylli brooklyn, oakNYC, Century 21 but you have to be in the mood to fight through crowds and look through messy clothes for the good deals.
Also OTTEnyc, Lola y Maria. They all have websites you can browse through, just google them 🙂 or I have their links on my sidebar.
Susie, it just occurred to me that the “blog mode: addressing fashion” exhibit will be up at the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum. And the Sartorialist has an opening for his exhibit on 1/22 at the Danziger Project gallery, which means that it should still be up as well.
Way-hey…. even more tips!
Michelle: I did note those two exhibitions… I have others on my list too!
Shallom: I will battle through Century 21….
I know I’m greedy but do keep them coming and if I compile it all into an notebook, I’ll scan it in for all!
The blue framed eye wear is so fab! Where did you get those? Can’t wait to get my hands on such fabulous eye-candy!
