Lingerie like dresses, sheer materials, lace, satin etc. were all over the catwalks for spring/summer 2006. Some of the looks came off looking like you really are about to go to bed or worse….walking the streets! That is why I like to wear my collection of vintage slip skirts and dresses with things that don’t necessarily match. I never knew I had amassed such a huge collection of vintage slips until I was sorting them out by colour the other day (yes you can officially call me weird!) It’s like a nervous tick of mine. As soon as I see a slip in a colour I don’t have, I’m having it. I like to look for colours that are a little unusual as well, not the normal blacks, pale pinks and whites.
The great thing about them is you can dress them up or down. I like to wear them over skinny and baggy jeans, over jumpers or t-shirts. If you want to be traditional you could wear them under skirts so that you have the lace edging peeking out which is very cute. Contrasting them with tights or leggings can get different effects too depending on what colours you put together. You can double up slip skirts as skresses too! It’s also a very cheap way of getting a dress for next to no money. Just snazz it up with some heels and maybe a belt and you’re good to go. Also, they’re great for taking on holiday, just roll em’ up and squeeze them into tiny compartments – you never know when they might come in handy! I could go on and on about these flimsy bits of material – my wardrobe life savers!

Hey, I thought I was the only girl who did the underslip over tops and pants look! There’s a shop here in Melbourne that sells ONLY customised underslips, they are a bit too decorated for my tastes, the simple elegance is lost with too many doilies and bows attached!! I’ll see if I can get you a picture.
I’ll have to look into getting some!
Where do you buy yours?
i also love slip dresses, but havent got a very big collection yet, i love wearing them with skivvys and tights. im also from melbourne and have seen many of those extreamly decorated slips, they are beautiful but a little to fussy for my style.
love your outfits susie, like always

I think Topshop has a concession with decorated and customised slips….I’m not too keen on them either because a slip in itself can be quite dressy/fussy enough depending on the amount of lace, the kind of material. Any more embellishment would take away the simplicity as Lol B says….
Ama, I buy mine from vintage stores like Rokit or Beyond Retro (in London) or sometimes Ebay…except you have to be careful or you could end up with BO-marred slip dresses……it’s happened before! I also found loads in Clignancourt flea market in Paris which are beautiful….
waoo..they are so nice~ I really like the red one!!!
I <3 satin material!!!!
Really so nice dresses!! I love to buy my dresses from Brooks Brothers store through couponalbum.com…
Your post helped me research my own essay on innerwear-as-outerwear at http://www.ThreadforThought.net . Thanks!
