Ooh La La Alison

When people ask me if I have a style icon, I tend to be very vague about it because whilst I think it’s great to admire someone’s style, looking up to a style icon to the point of emulating them is just pointless a frankly a bit sad.  The phrase itself ‘style icon’ often gets thrown around too hastily.   

However, I may make an exception for Alison Goldfrapp who I genuinely think has incredible style.  In this month’s UK Vogue, there’s a wonderful feature on her where she talks about her fashion sense, her influences which is deeply connected to her music – something that makes Goldfrapp’s image so amazing:

‘The whole point is that the look is a direct reflection of the music, whic has a narrative and a colour and a feeling.  Visual images inform the music and music informs the images, which is why I’d never rely on a designer to do the work for us.’

I also love her endearing initial forays into fashion at the tender age of 10 for a school disco:

‘I found a flannel in the bathroom that I safety pinned to a raincoat, because I had seen pictures of mods pinning beer towels on the back of their parkas.  Then I wore jelly sandals and some flowery stockings I bought at a jumble sale.’ 

Unlike a lot of people on celebrity planet, you can tell she has an intuition about fashion and style, something that is integral to her and something that she dotes upon – it’s not just an afterthought taken care of by a stylist.  I don’t usually gush about popstars but I do so want to raid her wardrobe – and her’s only!
