No, you are mistaken!

I was walking around Brick Lane the other day and I was stopped by a frighteningly fashionable guy (he was wearing neon yellow pants with neon pink trainers and a sequinned hoodie – he looked like he had stepped off the pages of Wonderland…in fact, he could well have been the guy in Wonderland!) and he just brusquely asked, ‘Ann Sofie Back?’.  Now I was thinking he couldn’t possibly be mistaking me, Chinese girl for a Swedish avante garde fashion designer.  So then he pointed to my skirt and I immediately got what he was asking – as in, whether my SKIRT was by Ann Sofie Back.  It wasn’t.  I said ‘No no…it’s from a Hong Kong independent designer.’  After that, crestfallen, frighteningly fashionable guy could no longer spare un-stylish me, who doesn’t own any wonderful Ann Sofie Back, any more of his precious time and off he strided towards a whole pack of neon-clad dudes.

Mjfaux This has been happening A LOT lately.  My Ebase skirt being mistaken for Marc Jacobs, my Tashi (Japanese designer) skirt/harem pants being mistaken for Preen.  I take it as a compliment only because as much as I would like to own the more expensive labels mentioned, I also like buying things that are great designs in their own right even if they’re not labelled or pricey.  I like my cheap thrills as much as I like buying more expensive things.  I don’t weight one over the other.  Most of the time, people are very nice about it and don’t make you feel embarrassed that you’re not a label wonderkid and you take it as a compliment.  But sometimes, like said impossibly hip, neon guy, they make you feel about 3 feet tall because you’re not deemed cool enough to be part of their hip and happening gang.  Amazing, how a tiny piece of fabric sewn at the back of your clothes can affect how people see you.  Well….at least amongst the fashion pack of London.

  2. Renee…the top is by Patrizia Pepe, got it in sale a couple of years ago. It’s got these crossover straps at the back and drapes down at the bottom. It came in black as well but I love the lavendar colour!

  3. I love your personal fashion posts! And this one is wonderful. You look great, even if the names are not what others see! Such style and flair needs no name!

  4. they are just shallow. you always look fabulous and stylish. who cares about labels?

  5. label whores are not to feel afronted by, they are posers if the label and not the overall look is what attracts them to an outfit or peice. in my opinion paying ann sofie back prices for something you can pick up on the cheap and get the same end result isn’t laudible, only the end look is, whatever the cost.

  6. I hate it when people look down at you for not wearing the right labels. I remember being on a party full of fashion people. Two girls carrying designer bags asked me where I had bought my boots as they really liked them. I had bought them at this low price store in an end of town they probably wouldn’t want to be seen dead in, so I didn’t want to tell them. But I did, and as they walked away I could hear them laughing. All I can say is I’m happy I’m not one of those people – it must be exhausting to always worry about what’s right and what’s wrong all the time.
