Brollies Up!

I would not do London justice if I did not blog about umbrellas (or brollies as we call them here…) at least once!  The London Transport lost property office gets 7,026 umbrellas every year.  I can assure you that at least 50% of those are all mine.  I lose umbrellas on a regular basis so much so I feel like they’ve become my calling card that I leave behind.  So I am resolved not to buy anymore of those teensy weensy pac-away umbrellas that are about the size of an iPod.  No, I’m going super-size.  I’m going for old-fashioned, big, sturdy and frightfully ostentatious.

Here are some I found a BrolliesGalore:

(From left to right: Guy de Jean Can Can cream parasol, Frank Usher Mantova Camel umbrella, Sophia lace covered parasol, Guy de Jean Meggy cream parasol)

Now I know you’re thinking a parasol will only shield me from the sun but these actually double up as umbrellas.  Think of all the joyous times you’d have in the rain with these umbrellas and you can also whip it out in the sun and stroll about feeling incredibly fancy and lady-like.

You can order online on Brolliesgalore and they ship internationally as well me thinks.  But I’m going to head over to James Smith & Sons – one of the oldest umbrella shops in London – been in business since 1830!  It’s quirky, old fashioned shops like these that endear me to London.  The staff are also very lovely too!  If anthing is going to aid my umbrella search, it’ll be this place!

  3. yeah, its been raining a lot here in Copenhagen too. And I was just thinking about an article I read once about those lovely clear brollies that the Queen uses. I so want one of those! Really sturdy, kind of cups around you nicely, and you can see the light!
If only i could remember where it was from?

  4. Ok so u are talking to the biggest umbrella junkie this side of the western hemisphere! While england may be well known for its dreaded weather, the rainy season in the Caribbean also isnt something to be taken lightly. And with my clumsy self i found my self smashing those little umbrellas like twigs. THats why i am now the proud owner of a lage purple leopord print umbrella-complete with tasseled handle, a gentlemanly wooden handled cream number with matching rain coat, and a fun blue transparent ‘brollie. so, welcome to the club. And that old store looks so charming!
