The Jolt

I was suppose to ‘ease’ back into blogging with a casual pace and a clear head.  Ok, so my head did clear up a bit and I thank those for leaving messages urging me to take a break (but not to completely disappear…which I haven’t…) as I do feel semi-rested.  But it is as always, back to reality with a frenetic week ahead of me and a reminder over the weekend helped me to snap out of my childish cries for a holiday.

The ‘back to reality jolt’ came courtesy of someone rather unexpected.  The Blackberry was still switched on so someone alerted me that Style Bubble got a mention in Financial Times Weekend.  The FT Weekend however wasn’t really the main component of the ‘back to reality jolt’.  It was the fact that the article was written by none other than Daphne Guinness.  I became rather pathetically fan girlish as I went and tugged my boyf’s sleeves so we could drive to the nearest newsagent to see whether there’d be a copy of FT Weekend floating about and my tummy ache caused by greedy ice-cream eating suddenly disappeared.  I scanned the pages frantically, not being familiar with the FT Weekend’s layout and found this…

"And between couture fashion and street fashion, there is a certain
continuity. It’s great to go to London’s Camden Market or downtown New
York and see what the kids are wearing. Today, you don’t even have to
travel to do this; all you have to do is look at fashion blogs. I refer
to them continually, and think quite soon they will start to dictate
what’s really going to influence the fashion industry – all those
little voices at sites such as the Sartorialist and Style Bubble, with
such a wide reach. On one site you might see a hipster in Williamsburg,
New York, for example, in very tight, very shrunken jackets and
trousers, and then you jump to another and see a different type of
person wearing an oversized shirt, belted with silver tights. It’s like
a bunch of ad-hoc experiments going on all the time."

Yup, a wee mention in a sentance but spirits were lifted and post-house move (will all be sorted out this weekend but I might be sans internet for a few days…BT should get a move on…), I will be gearing the blog back up to what I think it should be churning out and what I want it to produce.  I am an all or nothing kind of person.  If I feel the blog is lagging a bit, I’d rather delete it in an instant than keep it half-arsed.  In true fan-girl style, it took an exceptional mention from Ms. Guinness to give me that added bit of motivation.

The rest of the article is actually quite a nice stance on experimentation in streetstyle being influential whilst at the same time lauding couture for propelling fashion’s artistry levels and accusing the ‘middle ground’ of being diluted.  The sort of fashion pick-me-up article that had more meaning to me but actually also lays out some fair points about the future of fashion.

  4. Glad you’re back, but it’s good that you had a break as you work so hard!
That’s amazing to be mentioned by Daphne Guiness, quite fitting as you’re both style icons. If you ever start a magazine you should call it jolt, just an idea.

  5. i’m glad to hear you’re re-energized! what would the fashion community do without susie bubble? you’ve become quite the online presence it wouldn’t feel the same without you!

  6. Oh my, I’m doing a little fangirlish squealing of my own- it’s no wonder Ms Guinness mentioned you (and not that much of a surprise that she’s seen Style Bubble), this is so cool!

  9. v glad you got a copy, was all prepared to send you mine! there’s nothing like a mention from a personal icon and ice cream to cheer one up – an irresistable combination. glad you’re feeling happier, c

  10. I am actually reading your blog because of the mention in the FT. Will probably become a regular. Heartfelt congrats. Cheers!

  11. Why is everyone in the pictures or mostly everyone caucasian? Is there any muse in fashion that is not a beautiful skinny white lady? Or does everyone wish to look like that? We all can’t be Tinsely Mortimer or Daphne?
