Excuse the long pause between this post and my last post. There is some continuity however as I am in fact going to rinse my issue of Purple Fashion magazine (it costs so much that this HAS to be the case…). Through the power of fashion dailies/weeklies and the past few months of AW08-9 trend guides being thrusted upon us, certain keywords have been ingrained into my head; lace, nun, plaid, the Queen, power silhouette, elegant etc etc. However, Purple have come up with a different kind of trend vocab in their aptly named AW08-9 fashion round-up entitled Vocabulary, shot by Horst Diekgerdes and styled by Camille Bidault Waddington (I wish I bought more mags with her work in it…) which I tried out so intrigued I was at this slightly different look at trends…

Craie – Meaning ‘chalk’ in French. I used to like tidying up chalk pastels in the school’s art drawers but I never really liked it as a media (I get creeped out by the noise it makes against the paper….yes, I am THAT strange). Still, the colours are lush looking and I particularly like these colours in boiled wool which I’ll be on the lookout for when on my vintage searches.
Vintage Pringle cashmere sweater, Primark blue t-shirt, KaPowWow lilac neck ruff, Gap pistachio trenchcoat worn as a skirt, white tights worn over bright pink tights, ASOS patent nude pointy shoes.

Sea Urchin – I think the word is more of a reference to the ‘spiky’ textures which brings to mind Nova Dando’s shoulder spikes but Camille Bidault Waddington combines plenty of textured black and coincidentally, I’ve accumulated a lot of textured black. It’s a pity my vintage Lanvin jacket hasn’t arrived with its odd sort of quilting but once that’s here, I’ll have plenty of ‘sea urchins’ to play around with.
Anthony Vaccarello headdress, vintage gold and black bed jacket turned inside out, vintage fringe skirt worn as a top, vintage matt black sequin skirt, vintage leaf crochet t-shirt draped at the side, Tim Ryan black fringe scarf, Office shoes.

Foulard – I must say if I didn’t have a fringe, I’m not sure how I’d attempt a headscarf…. taking my hair off my forehead with a scarf on made me look sort of scary for some reason. Another case of accumulation, this time purely accidental. The scarves are mostly rejects from my mum and my grandmother apart from the scarf top which I always look at and go ‘Doh!’ as it’s such a simple concept, turning a scarf into a top yet I willingly bought it.
Assortment of vintage scarves draped around the shoulders, worn as a belt and as a headscarf, Mimko primary coloured scarf top, vintage paisley print skirt, Falke deep red tights, Salvatore Ferragamo black bow pumps.

Cloud – Ah the opportunity to bring out all that fluffy, ruffly, puffy stuff that isn’t at all heavy but needs something weighty to squash it down in my drawers and shelves. My clouds are of the grey sort because this washout of a summer has hardly produced any other sort. I’ve really also got to get more of those Topshop tutus that fray extraordinarily well and get tangled up in a pleasing way.
Vintage grey scribble print bed jacket, Topshop grey tulle tutu skirt, vintage pleated long sheer slip tied up at the knees with a vintage cream slip worn underneath, Zara grey patent ankle boots.

Charity – Easy enough for thrifters all over the place. I’m assuming it’s a nicer reference to the ‘bag-lady’ look. I like to look to the elderly ladies waiting for the bus at 2pm in the afternoon on a weekday for inspiration. I’m not sure why I like sweeping my hair across my fringe like this, otherwise known as a ‘faux’ fringe’, especially when I have a fringe already. Goes better with the charity prints.
Vintage green geometric print dress, Topshop pale blue plaid popper shirt, vintage faux fur bolero, vintage navy gloves from my mother, vintage cream and burgandy patent slingback shoes.

Hideous – A controversial one seeing as some might call ALL of my outfits hideous. I did declare to the boyf who was taking my pics, this outfit was supposed to be hideous and said he kinda liked it. Might be the shiny legs blinding his vision of course. A far cry from Purple’s polished version of hideous with the only thing that is vaguely gauche being the too-orange tan.
Jonny Loves Rosie gigantic head bow, vintage floral tiered skirt worn as a one-shouldered top, Topshop black sequin shorts, Urban Outfitters gold metallic leggings, vintage perspex wedges.

Optical – When I used to post excessively on The Fashion Spot, people often remarked on the number of stripy tops I had. Yes, I’m Susie and I’m a Uniqlo-stripe-aholic. I couldn’t bear life without Uniqlo stripy tops and my grey and black wide-striped long sleeved t-shirt gets the most wear as evident here as it’s currently in the wash. I don’t mind defecting to the poloneck though. All the better to try out faux bobs. I have still come to the conclusion that I couldn’t be without my long hair… all the better to make a fake wise-man long moustache with…
Uniqlo stripy poloneck, navy dress worn as a skirt, Sock Dreams vertical striped black and white socks, Pedro Garcia silver flats.
Other keywords which I’m itching to try but haven’t had the time or the right means yet…(dippy being my operative basis…)
I longed to try out Purple’s subdued interpration of Manga but was too floored by these Junko Shimada shoes to even bother trying. Instead, I’ll have to seek out the boutique on rue Saint Florentin to marvel at them…

so great!! 🙂
Lilac, blue and pink together is a nice combination.
when i saw the pink tights under white tights that already blew my mind. i’m trying not to be fangirlish now but
wowowow.
vintage bed jackets + headdresses are the way forward (backward?). the 60s vibe of the optical. floored.
*Ahem Mr. Cho, this is why thebubble will never be known as a ‘cheesy blog’. You can be scared now.
Egads! This si going to sound duper fangirl-ish but this is TOO WONDERFUL!!! The amzingness is overwhelming. I especially love foulard.
My wardrobe has been calling for some cloud and foulard (I like that now I can name this as if it is an essential)and maybe even some reproduction.
Is that your new balcony???
I love them all, but the last, with that hair especially, was ace.
love this post. a lot of fun. sometimes fun is missing from most fashion blogs.
I became OBSESESSED with vintage scarves about 6 months ago, and have been making clothing from them. I can’t seem to stop myself.
i love the first outfit .
Heya, you cloud outfit isnt working for me 🙁 im getting the reproduction image!
Other than that i <3 these!
love the optical look
great job
Your interpretations are so spot on! Great looks. Really makes me want to be more adventurous (but then another part of me is lazy and gets overheated in lots of layers so quickly!).
Fabulous interpretations!! I am so impressed right now it’s ridiculous.
I was going to say “Foulard” was my favorite, but they’re all my favorite. Nice job, Susie! It’s really nice seeing you do outfits.
so much more inspired than the heels & shorts skirts that predominate NY fashion week. it’s like a vacation for my eyes; and now i know what to do with the neon orange h&m stockings.
love all your takes on Purple’s keywords.
i just thought id never see the day when i saw susie bubble in hotpants! 😀
I hate the noise of chalk on paper too – I hate all dry, gross textures (like cotton balls).
and this is why i love your style. great post!
Looks like you had so much fun!
ohh i like the outfits for sea urchin and cloud youve imitated them really well! love the pastely colours all tho i dont know weather i would feel strange wearing them in winter?
fake wise-man long moustache…haha, these outfits are superb, my favourite is cloud and “Manga” looks like lots of fun and colours
i love what you did for the Foulard one and I love how you look so fun in the Hideous one, I was just thinking bout it and I would love to see you without the fringe, You’re gorgeous but I really wanna know what your eyebrows look like! so curious!
If truth be told, I have terrible brows….really thick… rubbish at doing stuff to them…plucking and the like…. !
Oh my god those shoes!
Brilliant! I love when you do outfit posts!
Susie… you continually amaze me with the sheer number of items you have. REALLY. now that you’ve moved, maybe you should do a closet post and document down how you house all your clothes?!
My favourite’s the first chalky outfit! (:
You did a wonderful job!
You ARE just so stunning! I am your new fan. :X
great interpretation, Susie!
I am particularly in love with the foulard and sea urchin ensembles!
You’re sooooo wonderful it always makes me smile every time I look at the pictures of you. You’re the one and only, girl!!!
i can see what your boyfriend sees with the hideous outfit, i really like that one !
also the bob is cute…but your right about keeping your long hair !
This post is just incredible. I love the way you interpret all these trends.
i like the bob too… it’s a bit egyptian/rei kwakubo with the geometric bangs. but after cutting my hair… i miss it.
also two other things i wanted to say first LOVE the cloud look on you… so susie bubble. and the stripes… i’ve been holding off on mixing horizontal with vertical, for some strange reason, but with a little bit of diagonal it may happen.
🙂
Haha I love the ‘hideous’, those gold leggings are the bomb 🙂 Personally I might try the ‘dippy’ look..
Can I just tell you how amazing you are for being able to adapt ALL of those looks so perfectly!? I’m astounded, seriously.
And I think your “hideous” look is way better than theirs. :]
is it carnaval time?
Oooh, you’re the hardest working fashion blogger out there! I love all of this, but Charity especially. You got me wanting to try out the faux fringe look. And I have bangs already too but it looks so pretty and 1940s-ish in a non-costumey way!
I’d just about given up on trends for this season but these re-interpretations by Purple have made things a little more interesting. Good post.
Hi Susie, I thought I’d let you know, I was inspired by this post so much I created a few outfits based around the keywords on Polyvore.com

= tucking hair in turtleneck
and making johnny depp chocolate factory hair
a la anna wintour
:]
Awesome! (I know, I know, I said I wouldn’t be reading any blogs in my ‘fashion detox’ either – ahem :-/)
what a great post. it’s so fun to see the way you interpret the looks through your own clothing and personality. you look great!
Oh wow, love these interpretations! I absolutely adore the ‘Craie’ one! The colours are beautiful…
Susie, I’m one to talk with my Samson complex, I know what you mean about long hair being your ‘thing’, but you NEED to get your hair cut into that bob. It looks absolutely amazing on you.
Also, the white tights over the pink look amazing.
Perk of new apartment:
The wood behind you looks like very shiny pretty hair.
PS your ‘hideous’ outfit was probably one of the least hideous outfits I’ve ever seen you do. Je l’aime.
I initially wanted to just choose a few out of the many outfits, but I love them all, I can’t choose at all…if I had to choose, it’ll be charity and hideous. I love how you put the whole outfit together in charity yet still manage to look polished with attitude.Hideous is awesome! Loving how the big ass flower headband goes well with the skirt become top, and the shiny gold leggings are perfect!
*btw, I totally support that you should get a bob!!!AMAZING!
lovely lovely lovely outfits. i thought you chopped off your hair for a sec!
Wow.. I would totally kill myself trying to walk in those Junko Shimada shoes, but it might just be worth it…
I love your Craie – look to the point of wanting to come round and take it off you! You have such a good eye for combinations of colour and texture. Could you come organise my wardrobe for me!?
youre such an FUNtastic girl
Heya ! I love the third look and the last one (really cool !), nice style …
