I had just about given up on posting anything here as it turns out the iMac in my room comes equipped with the smallest keyboard in the world rendering it useless when faced with a Mavis Beacon-trained typist like myself. Thank god for a PROPER iMac in the lobby complete with a cool light feature hanging over my head. Ostwald Helgason is a designer that has fallen victim to being featured on this blog on more than one occasion but I could not let the SS 09 collection go as I feel like they’re getting into their stockist stride, having seen that they are now available at Beyond the Valley and Kokon to Zai in Portobello.
As always, Ballet Russes is their source of inspiration and for SS 09 they have chosen Les Noces (The Wedding) as their focal point. Look closely at the pieces and ye shall find old Russian portrait photographs hidden amongst the prints and revealing themselves to you in different ways (would enlarge the pics to get a better idea). They have also done a play on matrushka little-big proportions by making pieces look both fitted and oversized all at once (the check jacket below is a good example). Though they have taken Russian folk garments as inspiration, I’m glad that it is the prints and the colours they have used and not the shapes as they have kept everything really sharply cut in a way I have not seen them do before.
The excitement over the Ballet Russes exhibition in 2010 continues…

HOW much do I want the jacket in the second image? The answer is: lots x
omg that dress. LOVE!
Gorgeous! the printed pieces remind me of African dutch wax designs… and now I’m homesick.

If I wore that downtown along with the gorgeous diamond necklace from http://www.idonowidont.com that my fiance bought me I would look like such a fashionista.

First off: happy birthday, Susie!
The jackets really are gorgeous, though. In fact, it’s all lovely- and I’m not even a big fan of Russian-inspired prints. That exhibition does sound fascinating though..
Wow, how amazing, I’ve never heard of this designer actually, which is quite embarassing as I am on the cusp of the industry. Thank you for educating me today!
I can barely endure one pattern in an outfit. These are totally wild. I wouldn’t mind having that dress though.
this is amazing! i am a pro dancer with the nerdiest love for dance history. and the ballet russe is my fav time in dance history! this is awesome.
Happy Birthday Susie! Have to say I’m loving that plaid bolero as well and those prints are so creative. How do you find all these amazing people?
The prints are amazing, especially in the 2nd and 3rd pics. Also, I’m just parroting Brandon, put happy birthday and how do you find thee designers?
He’s a Scandinavian designer, isn’t he? The name sounds Scandinavian, anyway. I could have told, the designs look very Scandinavian = cool.
I know it wasn’t the point of this post at all, but it’s great to see a label using Paul Pavlovska as their model! And the dresses are beautiful as well. Oh and happy birthday too.
The prints are fantastic. And I really like the volumes and the colors… Love it all!
I like the way it both fitted and oversized at the same time. It make your outfit more fun when mix up with something else. I love strange proportion, their prints is cool too and that white shirt.. everybody should have one. I got one similar though but i want more!
Beautiful and inspired, exactly what I love in fashion.
Happy Birthday

Geez Happy Birthday Bubble – glad you are in Paris to be an indulgent materialistic gal – I’d be worried if I saw you in the Shetlands!!
Missed your posts whilst in sunny Barbados taking time off from being student to become a complete want it all materialistic scumbag and was right to think along these lines with yet another inspiring gorg black jacket by ballet russes(I’m a sucker for ’em). I noted their use of gingham as I was reading up on Brigitte Bardot, I did spend my days with school books not mags so some dose of brain food!
Perfect. I’m highly into unexpected plaids!!
Perfect. I’m highly into unexpected plaids!! happy birthday!!
The optical illusion prints are fantastic, just the right mix of proportion. Thanks for the inspiration!!
I like the dress in #4. Is it me or does the pattern make tummies look flatter?
the prints look v. v. basso and brooke (who are amaaaaaaaaaaaazing and never get the press or fanfair they soooo richly deserve)
