An interview question which stumps me to no end is the ‘Do you have a style icon?’ one… ‘Err…no…?’ My thoughts on this oft-thrown-about phrase is that there are those with iconic style that many revered but a personal style icon is a different kettle of fish. For me there just isn’t that someone that I want to worship and create a little shrine for and whose style resonates with my own so much so that I want to coo "You’re MY STYLE icon!" at them with starry eyes.
A better question would be (and someone did ask me this in my recent FAQ post…) whose wardrobe would you want to raid? That means something different altogether because it is taking individual pieces from someone’s wardrobe and wearing it in an entirely different way because it’s gone into my wardrobe. I think I said Daphne Guinness and Roisin Murphy whose styles I also admire but not in that style iconic way…. however, I’ll say yes to their clothes, ta very muchy…
Ebony Bones pops up in press every now and again even though her music hasn’t quite taken flight yet (2009 marks her album debut I believe…) and I believe through her own self-styling, and a bit of clever borrowing, she manages to put together these endearingly cartoonish and eclectic looks. Of course I’d want to dissect it a bit…take a chain necklace from here and a triangular hat from there….maybe take her selection of graduate designer dresses out of context. Yes, Ebony, I’d gladly come and *ahem* organise your wardrobe… hope you don’t have anything lurking from your Family Affairs-past…
