ABU

>> I realise these mini-posts are getitng rather tiresome but I promise something of note will come later on today.  I didn't realise Mark from Cobrasnake had snapped this rather odd shot where nobody is paying attention apart from Phil from Streetpeeper, but it does capture a bit of an ABU moment…yes, without meaning to sound crass and inane…it's a bit of an Asian Bloggers United thing going on in this pic… though technically speaking I wouldn't refer to Chinese/Korean/Japanese as Asian.  I'll put that down to American speak infiltrating into my vocab.  Anyhow, I'm going back to London tonight and this was just a mini mini post to say, thanks to Tommy  and Phil for guiding me through New York Fashion Week because they're seasoned pros and I'm…erm…unseasoned.

To London we AB's go… will also cease to refer to that term abbreviated or otherwise in conversation and in writing because it's pretty naff!

  1. Why wouldn’t you refer to Chinese/Korean/Japanese as Asian? Those are all… Asian? XD I guess I’m a little baffled here because I’d refer to myself/my heritage as European even if I were to be born in, say America? Just to show my heritage, yet I’d say I’m American if I were born there though. But my heritage would be European… though I am, in fact, Belgian.
This doesn’t make any sense, does it?

  2. I actually like the mini post! They load faster in my crotchety computer and they’re a faster read for those times when you really should be working . . . like the pic.

  3. Eline: In the UK, when people say ‘Asian’, we are referring to Indians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan people…. it’s just a different turn of phrase…. for Chinese/Korean/Japanese….errr, we just say…Chinese/Korean/Japanese…it’s a bit confusing!

  4. Is that the LuxiRare jacket your wearing? Looks great!! Hope you got a chance to meet her as well.

  5. That’s a pretty cool picture! Yeah I’ve taken to using ‘Asian’ as a term sometimes which confuses myself and everyone else too.

  6. I love the ABU shot, with nearly no one looking at the camera! Over at Threadbared we’ve been scratching our heads trying to figure out why there are so many of “us”…

  7. hi i was quite intrigued by your referring to chinese/japanese/korean as non-asians because i just had this talk with a japanese friend of mine who dosen’t think of himself as asian. but as a singaporean chinese, i’ve grown up thinking of japanese/korean/chinese and even hongkongers as asian. im sorry this has nothing to do with fashion but i really hope you could elaborate more on this. thanks.

  8. And here I thought I’d never be able to gaze upon the visage of the mysterious Tommy Ton. Now I want to go to Fashion Week all the more to revel in this ABB (asian blogger business)!

  9. AB stuff aside – I love this shot!
You all look a bit like you’re thinking ‘Oh my God! What’s gonna happen next? Where am I? Where am I supposed to be?’ Fashion Week Frazzlement 🙂
And bit sized posts are cool. We are all busy people – you don’t always have time to write bucket loads and we don’t always have time to read bucket loads!

  10. I knew if I looked at the comments of this post I’d find lots of references to the term ‘Asian’.
But Susie, I was surprised you said we in the UK just call Japanese/Korean/Chinese people separately, because growing up in London i’m used to people using the term ‘Oriental’ for that grouping of people, lots of my BBC friends refer to themselves as being Oriental.
I think this is a really interesting topic about the grouping of ethnicities/nationals in the English language.
For example; I know most of the world, when using the term European, would include Britain in that grouping, but as you know, us Brits don’t really think of ourselves as particularly European.
    It’s all very interesting non?

  11. Oops sorry, I forgot to mention how much i enjoy that photo and your HAT, it’s grand!
