Mint Slayed

>> In a week of constant back and forth bickerings of 'He said xxx, he did xxx…', creative director merry-go-round movements and corporate subtefuge allegations, I've grown a bit weary.  I also had people emailing me about the John Galliano situation asking for 'comment' to which I've said 'no comment, only because it seems ludicrous to comment on something I personally know nothing about, stirring the pot when it's been stirred enough by people thinking they can add hasty input when the situation is not yet 100% clear.

I've also been made to feel like I have to quell melancholy over the whole situation because I'm supposed to automatically condemn and assume.  Did I shed a tear over the fact that the John Galliano collection shown in an intimate presentation may be his last if the label will shutter?  Yes and if that condemns me in the process, then so be it.

It only remains to be said that this mint green kimono robe from the (last?) John Galliano presentation with lace embroidery touched upon and encapsulated the magic that makes it all to easy for me to make the distinction between talent and personal action and not muddle the two.

Damn…what was that about my 'No Comment' stance?

  1. i definitely get the melancholic feeling. Galliano’s clothes were always so eyecandy-fun (i can’t think of a better adjective atm). This post reminded me of the whole Polanski rape controversy as his talent is still very definitely evident.

  2. so beautiful! I can’t really pose an opinion on the Galliano situation for I do not know the full details, but you cannot deny that he is a one-of-a-kind brilliant designer!

  3. I think your totally right that the situation is not yet clear enough to make a judgement. I love Galliano and am also not going to be so quick to make a decision on my opinion quite yet. Mainly in the hope that he just gets the treatment he needs and doesn’t stop designing. I’m not saying what he did (or supposedly did/said) is right but I just dont want to see the name go into oblivion. I love the combination of lace fur and feathers. The mix of textures is stunning. xoxo Abby

  4. I have a question, not regarding this recent update:
Could you link the post where you showed how to tie a scarf in different ways on your head? I love using scarves but know very few techniques. I’ve been searching through your archive but haven’t been able to find it yet!
Also I would just like to say that I much appreciate all the time and effort and love you put into this blog! If there’s no other blogs to read I can always be sure that you have updated.

  5. It’s difficult when a situation arises with someone you admire…something that makes you see them in a less than glowing light.
It’s hard to separate that incident from the initial talent that caused you to admire them so much. I’ve been in a position to meet quite a few musicians lately, and at first I was shocked at the disconnect, and sort of fell out of love with a few bands because of it. It just doesn’t seem to make sense that the ability to create something wonderful/beautiful (be it music, art, fashion, etc. ) doesn’t necessarily translate to the persons character/personality. It’s hard to separate the two…but in the end by supporting a designer/artist/musician you are indeed supporting the person, not just the clothing/art/music that they produce.
It’s a personal choice whether or not the personality of the individual will affect your view of their work or not. For me, it’s very difficult to separate the two, I address it on a case by case basis…

  6. i love Galliano but what he did was totally wrong and there is no possible way to say it wasn’t. Talented people shouldn’t be allowed to act how they want just because they are talented.

  7. I’m not a big fan of mint green, but done up in a beautiful kimono like this, and combined with the black fur and feathers, it’s like a yummy mint chocolate ice cream cone–delicious!

  8. definitely right about the no comment thing. there’s no point. obviously we all love what Galliano does and did, but most of us did not know him personally, it just seems silly to really comment or have an opinion, except to say that my personal opinion is that i hope he’ll continue to do what’s necessary to gain respect back from those that matter. i don’t think this takes away from his genius, what he is so incredible at, and after seeing the collection i was in awe as always. i hope to see his line continue with him as the designer!

  9. Owow Mint on mint…Somehow that shot of black balances the delicacy of the color but it still feels so fresh and sexy…I’m smint-ten ;D Thanks for sharing!

  10. My god, mint green patent with all those teeny tiny straps and tiny gold chain. Those are beautiful. I can’t add anything to the Galliano situation. It really has all been said.

  11. Oh the minute I saw this whole collection it was a sharp shocking reminder of the amazing talent that’s been lost. And that kimono robe is divine, the best piece in the collection, but I would say that, given that half of my wardrobe is silky pajama onesies, kimono’s and lounge trousers!

  12. I agree, you shouldn’t comment on the situation which is not yet 100% clear. I mean, it’s not like there’s a five minute video of him proclaiming his love for Hitler.
