Tofu is not exactly one of those things that will be everyone’s cup of char. I’m a personal tofu lover but for others it’s a real stomach churner. So when faced with a fashion label called Tofu, some may balk and others will be intrigued. I would say that a mid-priced fashion brand that doesn’t fall into the brackets of ‘sensible’ (Reiss, Whistles, Hobbs etc…) or ‘out to please everyone’ (Diesel) and actually carves out their own design niche is not something easy to find. I think Tofu does that nicely with a price range that is surprisingly affordable (¬£30-¬£150) for design that you see on higher fashion planes. The autumn winter collection for 2007-2008 alludes to a mix of Boudicca and Charles Anastase with a lot of detailed black (the only way I can wear tons of black is with those subtle touches…) and girly princess shapes. It felt like a bit of an undiscovered gem when I first stumbled into the Tofu store in Covent Garden a year ago (it’s been open for a little over a year now) as the dark exterior and dim lighting wasn’t exactly inviting but nonetheless the clothes speak for themselves and reaffirms my growing belief that design with avant garde leanings can exist at lower price levels.
