I mentioned last week that shamefully, I purchased Topshop’s grey satin turbans and that I would try some outfits that wouldn’t be shouting ‘Look at me, I’m chanelling Prada SS07’ despite the blatant reference with the turban. Well mission accomplished. For a start, the turban is more normal and mundane looking than one might think and I should have known since it is Topshop, that it would be tame in comparisom to the real McCoy (which I saw on Sloane Street priced at a whooping ¬£260!). Really, one would call it a soft hat and in the steely grey, it’s just easy peasy to wear.
So versatile is it, that I would venture to the office, the supermarket, a party, shopping, whatever, wherever wearing it and no-one would bat an eyelash. That sounded like some kind of cheesy infomercial but I kid you not. I was almost a little disappointed at it’s boring demeanour. Still, getting a lot of wear out of a ¬£15 hat is no bad thing and since I was out to make it last past this spring summer season, it looks like I’ll most certainly accomplish that.
I found that wearing it with my fringe tucked under the turban on the left made it more ‘turban’ like and wearing it with the fringe out (easier for me as I have a LOT of fringe) made it more ‘hat’ like. So I suppose in that way, I could control the ‘turban’ qualities of the hat with my hair. So I guess in a way I’m thankful that Topshop was out to make a bit of dosh when they produced this turban/hat by making it as ordinary as it is.

all the looks are fab. but no color at all? it’s still summer, isn’t it?
You wouldn’t think it’s summer in London…. we’re having April showers in June…. really really odd….and surprisingly cold at night too!
I’ve been a fan of your blog for quite a while now, because I love your writing style and you actually put _thought_ into your entries. SO many fashion bloggers merely stick up pictures of their latest finds and go: I Want This! or It’s Cute! or variations on that theme.
I also appreciate your style, even though mine tends to verge on the classic/ boringly Old Hollywood well-groomed, though that too, sticks out a mile in my city.
In relation to turbans, I’d say – not for me, unless I can somehow make them more ‘me’ – like a flapper cloche hat or something.
American Apparel scarves make good turbans too.
shemaghs and turbans, oh my god
you look great! I specially like the first outfit!
OOOh I love the turban. I do admit I like it the best with the fringe tucked in… I was doubting on buying the madonna one, but finally decided not to do it. (will probably be able to find it in the sales…)
I just adore the vintage slip dress and the spider web socks! Got to get me some of those!
very nice. I want the grey! But it’s no longer on their site and my local topshop doesn’t stock them… woe woe woe.
I love your silver dress, and how on earth do u get that Miss Sixty jeans so tight on you? Are they J lots? They bloody drape on me! 🙁
Ho ho Cordelia…because I is a fatty!
The turban is amazing! I’ve been trying to find one stateside, but with no luck. Loving the first outfit… where is that skirt from???
A greek magazine had a journalist wear a red Prada turban for a day. She went to the super market, she took the tram, she went shopping in the Athenian equivalent of New York’s 5th Avenue, she went to a trendy coffeehouse, etc. People’s reactions varied greatly ; a couple of elderly ladies reminisced about their turban-wearing days and thought her very elegant, while a 30+ fashionista asked whether the turban was by Prada and thought her very brave for following the trend. But, most men hated the look and some even made rude comments to the lady, who bore it all very well with the air of a diva; from the moment she adopted that attitude, people kept a respectful, awe-inspired distance, except from a teenager who asked for her autograph.
I think to wear a turban is not for the faint-hearted ! A woman should not attempt it unless she has great belief in herself and is able to handle this level of exposure of her personality.
Oh Susie, you is no fatty! I promise, no fatty whatsoever..
I love all of the outfits that you have paired from the neck down; I think the monochromatics and the flowing ease is perfect. I can’t say that I like the turban with a single one of them though, but that’s just because I’m sort of against the turban trend.
Just my opinion. The majority vote in these comments seem to be FOR the turban, but you seem to be the kind of person that wouldn’t really care if we liked it or not. That’s why you’re so stylish, because you’re daring.
hey you blog is very beaty!!!
i love it!
susie, you look great! you are definitely no fatty, i think that someone was just seeking attention.
i like this ‘turban’ much more than the prada one, it’s less severe… and it suits you well.
turbans are cool, but, personally i may, i may sit this one out. maybe….
i share your love of headgear! (am in process of putting together some confection for a wedding). i think in this case, the turban is more wearable as it resembles a 20s cloche more than a strict turban..
Susie, do you know a japanese magazine called Ghinza? if so, do you know where to find it in london or preferably in paris? thank you! xxx
Still waiting to have Topshop back in France or at least to have a shipping over here… Love the pictures, they’re mazing with the backgrounds, it totally fits the atmosphere you’ve created on your blog!
I knew you’d do it!
I’m very impressed. It really suits you, and you’ve managed to avoid looking like a victim!
