Prim n’ Proud…

primcov2_2.jpg

Primcov2_2 When I last talked up Prim magazine, people called it up (talking up-calling up…. goooo dissenters!) on the somewhat shonky graphics, text and general unprofessional quality of it all.  Well, I will persevere and keep banging on about it because quite frankly a) Kristin, the editor of Prim is frickin’ 14 years old, ’nuff said, b) the second issue which is online now is miles better and c) I like DIY-shonky zines anyway, the shonkier the better.  The fact that Prim has preened up a bit doesn’t detract from the fact that it’s a great bit of TEEN entrepreneurial effort that makes my efforts to start up a Young People’s Appreciation for Evelyn Waugh online book club when I was 14,frankly laughable.

I talk it up again because I have also got to keep an online track of e-zines and continue pondering whether a big enough sector will be carved up in these magical online zines that load up with moving bars.  Oh by the by, some people may find that annoying but I sort of thought it was like building up anticipation, the zine controlling the reader and not the other way round.  Another interesting concept to ponder…

The Future is Near, the future is miles and miles of ruffles in the hair, volume in the bum and strange animal masks…

And who doesn’t like a bit of Yelle to pep them up?

  1. why don’t you try something like this? you do say you want to make a magazine… an online could be the start! i’m sure you have lots of contacts that may want to be involved

  2. actually i fell in love with this online mag the first time you mentioned it…it’s between my bookmarks since then. but i didn’t know the editor was 14!?!? that makes me feel both pretty sad (for myself) and happy (for her)

  3. Can’t believe the editor is only 14! Now I feel like a waster! 🙂 Its a pretty good magazine and as its only the second issue I imagine its just going to get even better.

  4. i love prim! can’t quite believe kristin is 14. i’m not sure what i was doing at that age. but i think it involved hooch.

  5. 14!!! Wow, I wish I’d been that creative at such a young age. I loved the first issue and I can’t wait to take a look at the new one.

  6. i cant believe people spend a minute of their time typing negative comments on line. opinions are fine but negative insults, I just cant stand. this young lady is a leader in this field for her very young age and putting herself on a public space in an industry thats full of nasty pastys is brave. i agree with all the comments above. she rocks and we’ll see her face in the front row of every show in less than 5 years. i’d bet my flat on that. thanks for promoting her susie. xf

  7. 14? Fourteen? That is so impressive. *feels suddenly very, very ancient.* Not to take away from the fact that whatever the age of the editor it’s bloody good.

  8. this is quite interesting ‚Äì a 14 year old as an editor. i wonder who is funding prim. who does the artwork. who is the photographer, who hosts the site. all these boring things behind the scenes. prim is rather fresh, and i’ll follow its progress in the future. but i still wonder how a little kid could make this all work…

  9. The cover and The Future is Near story is not by Bianca Ghezzi, its Pavlunka (check pg77- Credits)

  10. Chantelle, I didn’t credit the cover/future edit with Bianca Ghezzi…just at the top of her own pic… apologies for not putting the photographer…
Cover shot and Future is Near shot by Pavlunka…

  11. wow!
ackk, i am forteen, and could only dream of making something like this.
did she make it alone or with friends her age?

  12. To whoever asked: Kristin does most of the big things for the issue (tracking down artists/designers, editing, putting together the myspace, putting together the issue) herself, but lots of the articles are submitted by other people and lots of the photography is freelance stuff

  13. Which is not to take away at all from the fact that she’s doing fantastic work on this…and I hope she keeps it up!

  14. Hold on a sec…”Young People’s Appreciation for Evelyn Waugh”?! I love it. Did this said club go anywhere? What did you discuss? I’ve only recently discovered Mr. Waugh and I can’t believe I’d overlooked him before…
Um, anywyays, criticising zines for not looking professional is totally missing the point! Everyone has to start somewhere, and if this is where this girl is starting that’s ridiculously impressive.

  15. Ali: It didn’t take off beyond a wee forum I tried to start up…. and a newsgroup I think that also died before it began…. there were about 10 members me thinks…
My obsession with Waugh is quite odd…. an accidental read when I was 11 yrs old….
Anyways…yeah… goddamn kids today… makes me feel about 2 inches tall!

  16. I like the typography on that one page, and the images are refreshing, unprofessional or not.
