Shot a la Newton

My job now involves hogging the Helmut Newton Machine at Topshop Oxford Circus for an hour playing around with a rail of Topshop stuff, working with some cool guys and gals before it opened to the public.  Me likey!  Especially when the concept of it is so very very simple yet forward thinking in the 1970’s era of Helmut Newton when setting up a mirror, a self timer, a shutter release was considered a magical ‘machine’.  Very clever of those Topshop folks indeed to recreate this machine in a cornered off area in the store and gussy it up with a Nars make-up counter and a rail of Topshop stuff (think bows, cocktail hats….hence all the hat shots in today’s gallery…) for you ppl to rifle through to style yourselves with.

But quick quick, it’s in London until the 15th and then moves to Manchester from the 17th until the 22nd… the machine shoots fast and moves rapidly too…

  1. Oooh is it free or do you have to pay to use it? I might pop there this weekend!
Although i can see how it’s very conniving – see yourself look great in the photos and then HAVE HAVE HAVE to buy it!

  2. Susie! you are so blessed!!! I hope i get to wear great outfits like that wherever I work after Uni!! your outfit is so darn cute. i love how the skirt covers your chest. and the colors are adorable! it sounds like you get to do such cool things at work. i’ll stop gushing now.

  3. That is such a neat concept, I wish Canadian stores went more out of their way for customers…
and you look fabulous. The heavy fringe is so becoming on you (how on earth do you handle it in the sweaty days of summer? my blunt cut bangs are always pushed back…)and the outfit it is simple yet colourful + PERFECT.

  4. I desperately need this contraption in my room for better blogging photos! I’m on the market for a large full-length mirror, so I may just be able to!

  5. oh i love that jacket!
wish topshop would put cool stuff like that in their online shop instead of the crap that is up there.
its very amusing to see the photos young girls take of themselves. silly silly!

  6. You look amazing!
I’m loving the idea of the Newton machine it would be great to have one of my own! I was very excited to here it’s coming to Dublin, I can’t wait to give it a go and look at it more closely to see if I could build one!

  9. Love the way you’ve paired the skirt with pale neutral colours. It looks fabulous!
I was holding off blogging abou this til I saw real people using it, not just models.. but everyone looks great. Must be fun! Have to see if I can get up to Dublin for it!

  10. Susie this is absolutely gorgeous!
I am a silent skim reader but this just can’t go uncommented.
    Love chelsea
    :]

  11. oh how i wish i lived in london! i can’t wait until i study abroad and end up spending all my money… ah well. i love your outfit btw!

  12. Yup, it’s free so get ye down there! The jacket is a vintage Members Only one…. had it for years…
My bangs/fringe will need a trim soon as I can’t physically see sometimes!
I definitely want one of these machines in my room too…would make blogging a whole lot bloody easier!

  13. the pictures look great!!– i also abs. love your skirt/dress. the print, colours “enchant” me..

  14. I’m tempted to give this a go. Don’t fancy queueing though…. I may check it out after work tomorrow. I always think what I see in the mirror never corresponds to photos, so could be interesting.
You look great in both pics by the way. Love that jacket with the skirt.

  15. Oh my, I love this outfit! I love your pose and expression and everything…and I adore those shoes. I’ve been trying to find some like that, but nothing in my huge size (US 11).
    Wow…I sound like a crazy fangirl. πŸ™‚

  16. Great skress! The bright colours look fantastic on you.
I am so excited that this is coming to Dublin!! I am not usually fond of photos of myself but I am definitely going to give this a go.

  17. Haven’t really ‘read’ your blog in a long time, since I’ve been very busy. But it’s great seein you still kick ass. πŸ˜›
What a brilliant concept. And I must say. Love the skirt and the way you styled it..

  18. I think the Newton is an exciting idea, although I think personally I would prefer to make do with the privacy and lack of fuss of hauling everything you want to try on into a little changing room with a curtain that doesn’t quite fit the width of the cubicle (why is this always the case?!)… The shots you’ve taken do look fantastic though!

  19. I think these are my favourite photo’s of you. I don’t know why but they just really stand out.

  20. What a smart marketing concept! And you pulled that skirt off beautifully. If I could only be so ballsy. πŸ™‚

  21. Went there today for abit of test, with my digital camera too hahahaha, ok after 5 shots. One picture came out rubbish with my pose in an awkward position, will post the photograph and my digital camera pics tomorrow.
    How you’ve got two pictures??

  22. i was in the oxford circus topshop the other day and i saw you on the wall and got thoroughly over excited. you look great – fab jacket and am deeply in love with those jenne o’s! besides you the 7 yr olds in top hats and grown up heels were rocking the newton machine. might have to try it before it leaves…

  23. For someone who balks at the use of lots of colour, I’m crazy about this outfit (and the pictures too). The gallery is also sort of inspiring because there are heaps of people who are so stylish!
