Rewinding but not Erasing

>> I really have to rack my brains for 'style icons' when I was growing up… actually I have to rack my brains still… well, I guess the shelf is getting a bit dusty in there but a hotchpotch of Gwen 'No Doubt era' Stefani, Shirley Manson, Justine Frischmann, Shampoo, Lauren 'Kenickie era' Laverne, Morning Musume and…Nina Persson from The Cardigans pretty much sums it up… not so much that they were style icons but that I remember certain gig, TV, magazine media moments where I went "She's sooooooo coooooool!"

Anyhow, it's been a while but I got re-acquainted (well not physically, I was just a loser gawker in the audience…) with Persson on two accounts;  recently at the Peter Jensen presentation in New York where she performed live, lilting voice matching sweet looks, bunny ear for bunny ear.  Then a week before, at at the HOPE A/W 10-11 show at Fashion Week by Berns where Persson's capsule collection with the label was presented.  The ten styles, which will be in stores in August, combine Persson's own taste and style sensibilities, which lend itself well to enhance Hope's own aesthetic so much so that in the show, her looks worked seamlessly with their own collection.  It seems like a refreshingly subtle and natural-feeling take on the whole celeb/fashion collabo strand.  Plus, there's a interesting mesh net skirt that appeals to a layering opportunist like me as well as a comfortingly big fur collar-ed loose winter coat that looks mighty good to hold up against your face.

  1. HA! Your childhood style icons list is like a walk down memory lane for me!! Perhaps, being on the continent it’s not as funny that you liked The Cardigans, but back in the USofA nobody knew who they were! I, however, loved them!!

  2. I really like the mesh skirt, pretty ordinary material but used in an interesting way.
I love all the looks =)

  3. I am smashed by the net skirt look, mixed the ordinary material with style and the model is looking very pretty in this style and the fur collar. Everything is nice.

  4. Dear Susie,
Oh boy I do remember those late 90s style icons; back in the day Nina Perrson was the bomb! She was sooo cool!
I like this colab. a lot! Very wearable!
ps I can’t believe you mentioned Shampoo..gosh they were cool wearing pvc silver pants!

  5. Your list reads like it could be mine! I practically worshipped Shirley, Justine and Gwen (esp. after I first heard ‘Just A Girl’, it’s still one of my favourite songs of all time). I know riot grrls were big in the States in the early-mid 90s, but we were probably just a touch too young to really get into that. And yay for the Cardigans -everyone in my class, self included, really fell for them after ‘Lovefool’ in Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo+Juliet, when Leonardo DiCaprio was the world’s biggest crush ever…jeez I feel ancient now…and envious that you got to see Nina Persson in the flesh.

  7. I’ve been a Cardigans fan for as long as I can remember. When I saw them about 6 years ago Nina was wearing jeans, a black tank top, and this dice bracelet and for some reason that look has just stuck with me.
+ that netted skirt is very awesome.
