I Got Wanged

>> No, not THAT Wang, or err… the other Wang for that matter.  This is Angie Wang.  I seem to have a good affinity with people called Angie.  Somebody sent me a link to Angie's relatively new illustration blog Wangie and it also got Tweeted around a bit.  Then before you know it, Angie, who caught my RT offered to draw a portrait of me.  As Wangie's tagline quite rightly states her illustrations are "unbounded by budget, sense or reality".  The ensembles that she draws on her characters are mostly conjured up from her own brain or where she does use known designers, they're twisted and styled beyond recognition or she takes elements of known designers work and puzzles them together to create her own unique composite creations.  It's sort of like serious Fashematics, where people might actually be tapping their chin and going "Hold up… that could… actually be… really REALLY COOL if that was a real shoe/garment!"

Angie is right in saying that she doesn't want to redraw what's already out there… and so she's put me in an otherworldly outfit that she hoped wouldn't be "too bizarre" for me.  Actually, I'm saying YES to everything… the tartan cage-jacket/vest following the lines of the plaid, a bodysuit
with braided legs, a clear yellow vinyl dress with structured opaque
panels and what looks to be suspender opera gloves.  In an email to me, Angie wonders whether it's all structurally viable.  Somebody SURELY has the chops and skills to make it all structurally viable.  The brain is ticking as to whether someone can collaborate with Angie in making her brain imaginings a concrete reality?  Maybe, maybe the two Angies (the other one being I Heart Norwegian Wood) can even get together for some skills exchange… that would be a story to spread around…

Or perhaps Angie prefers to keep her creations in JPG/PNG format… fair dos if that is the case.  Nonetheless, I'll be keeping tabs on what Wangie is conjuring up and I'll carry on dreaming about the possibilities of a plaid bodysuit and a tartan cage jacket…

  1. I love the illustrations! These looks are an inspiration and the artistic quality is wonderful. A shoe collaboration would be especially appropriate (Prada or Miu Miu maybe?)

  2. Susie get out of my head! RIGHT AS I was reading the first 1/2 of this post I was thinking “oooh, it would be so cool if illustrator Angie collaborated with a clothing designer and made a little line! The hangtags could have the illustrations on them!”…
And then BANG…you said the same thing…very weirded out right now 😉

  3. LOVE! Fashion illustrations are all well and good, but too often it gets repetitive and boring – willow-y gal in Alexander Wang/Givenchy/hot whatever of the season, but these feel so fresh and new! Love them!

  4. Love her illustrations! The colours are fresh and I love the imagination in the drawings. And yes, you need to kick that outfit in real life. Someday.

  5. This is a very pretty illustration of you girl. The artist has captured it perfectly. The hair and the face is beautifully made. Such a great piece of art. 🙂

  6. My fave part is zebra pattern like-blue highlights on the very black hair.

  7. This is so cool, I LOVE that she doesn’t want to illustrate what’s already out there and instead chooses to create her own ideas, it’s so much more interesting! I really like her illustration style too, it reminds me of graphic novels! I’d be so curious to see what kind of world she would invent if she did create her own graphic novel, what would these characters be like who wear these incredible getups?

  8. I read your blog all the time, and am super excited to see such creative illustrators being featured! I agree, I think the fact that she makes up her own creations is completely awesome.
I also do illustrations! My work is based mostly from Street Fashion from around the world. (Mostly Tokyo street fashion). Although my style is very different, I would love for you to give my blog a look! Thanks!!!

  9. These are fantastic! It would be amazing if these clothes/shoes could be made… A collaboration could be fantastic! And it would do so well, as well. I’d be right there on those suspender gloves.
