>> This is just a call out to New Yorkers to go on my spiritual behalf to check out this exhibition at the Boo Hooray pop-up gallery in Chelsea. "The Secret Public" is a retrospective exhibition of author Jon Savage and artist Linder Sterling and their collective zine, photographic montage work dated 1976-1991. The Secret Public was an art zine distributed by Rough Trade in Manchester in 1978 but the exhibition comprises work from various other publications as well as flyers and posters for the likes of Joy Division, Buzzcocks and Factory Records. It's not necessarily Mancunian nostalgia (Savage actually makes a very interesting comment on Manchester today holding onto their illustrious musical past…) that makes this exhibition attractive to me but more that I'm interested in Sterling's photo montage work which is probably the rawest manifestation of her feelings towards misogyny that pervades her work. Also from a purely and superficially aesthetic point of view, there's just something very powerful about the precision of her montaging. Thankfully Boo Hooray has a pretty comprehensive catalogue online to browse through…
I'm not there physically and seeing as it ends on May 23rd, hopefully some of you can go their and lap it up…
Oh, the obligatory fashion angle on a post… well, it's an obvious connection but of course Richard Nicoll has continued his collaboration with Linder Sterling for a second season in his A/W 10-11 collection… best represented in these beautiful photographs by Kasia Bobula taken for Dazed Digital.
Strangely enough, I actually like those pictures. They make me thing, though the one with the eye stretched open disturbs me a little :S
As for the tops, I rather like the way that the model and the t-shirt image look similar, with the same angle.
Abstract art is awesome (at least in my eyes)
