Despite my dislike of the overall mis-used consumerism of the Louis Vuitton logo, I was still intrigued to see the Marc Jacobs & Louis Vuitton documentary filmed by journalist, Lo√Øc Prigent so when passing by Colette in Paris over the weekend, I picked it up. In my opinion, there’s not nearly enough film documentary devoted to the subject of fashion so I’ll take what I can get. Judging from the indepth way the documentary goes behind the scenes into Marc Jacobs’ (for both his own label and for Louis Vuitton) creative process, it’s easy to see why so few of these sort of films are made… to protect those secret atelier moments. Here though, they’re literally all there for either enjoyment or general observation, depending on your love of Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton.
After the film, I came away thinking the same as I’ve always thought of Marc Jacobs; he’s got an eye for the ‘cool’ and the ‘hip – a gatherer of style rather than an excellent craftsman. However, it was a new insight to learn about his obsession and inter-mingling with the art scene and his feelings about himself as being a less of a creator in comparison to an artist (in his creative hierarchy, art comes at the top and fashion at the bottom…. ).
To illustrate, on his trip to Tokyo, he met the artist Yayoi Kusama, who has an obsession with polka dots, which resulted in these Louis Vuitton SS07 button bags. You do feel like he isn’t entirely sure of what he’s doing in his creative decisions but that happy accidents come his way which he makes the best of. I guess that’s the good thing about having an eye. It can help you out when things to do go wrong.
Here’s a clip of Marc Jacobs constructing those button bags with his team at the Louis Vuitton studios in Paris and also sharing his protein bars with them….

Thats so sweet..
LIke you I really dislike the widespread proliferation and mass consumption of louis vuitton.. but I like marc jacob’s aesthetic.
and its kind of reassuring to know (as a design student) that he himself has his doubts etcetera etcetera.. and Happy accidents?
I think thats the basis of experimentation, we wouldnt get anywhere new without them!
Im going to buy this right now.. and wish I was in some atelier sharing protein bars, or macaroons or something..
xo marie
I really fancy macaroons now. Where did you get the dvd?
It should really go over well in Russia where I am from. Polka Dot is a national Russian motive. I grew up in Polka Dot dresses and Polka Dot everything..
The button stuff reminds me of Patrick Kelly, from back in the day.
I adore Katie Grand!!! and her gap teeth!
her voice/look reminds me a bit of Anna Paquin’s.
how peculair & cute

I would love to see the dvd also….as for the macaroons, I never quite cared for them much, lol.
