The random connections I make in my head culminate with stuff like this. I’m just wondering whether Nicholas Ghesquiere took the wise words of now defunct UK RnB band Damage in their song ‘Ghetto Romance’ where they describe a girl with a ‘body like a racecar’ and came up with these highly technical moulded tops and trousers in fabrics as shiny as they come, for Balenciaga’s SS08 collection. The pieces are even topped with foam to make them even more car-like. Of course, Damage were referring to a much more visceral depiction of a woman’s body as a racecar but Ghesquiere has very kindly given power to the woman and instead of asking us to hone our bodies into a racecar, why not wear a racecar interior instead and be a ‘badass superstar’?
