The Timmy Mallett effect

I can’t say that i’m a very good Style.com-alike in the respect of presenting to you those trends that are guaranteed to be rolled into the high street and be reproduced in an array of editorials.  This of course isn’t very fair to those that went against the grain and chose not to go with the flow of the big gun designers just to make the SS08 trend round-ups come Dec/Jan time.

On Friday, I was ramming bows and rosettes down your throats and today, it’s Timmy Mallett fashion.  Yes, it’s true that magazines like Super Super have given Mr Mallett (a bygone UK kids’ TV presenter with a penchant for fluro specs and luridly coloured attire…) the unoffical originator of ‘nu-rave’ (I’m 100% sure, that phrase is not going to seen here forevermore…).    However, it is also true that Mr Mallett chose the best geometric printed shirts back in the day and that my love of beautiful geometry never seems to want to end.

So whilst flowers, organzas, goddess looseness and painted frocks are ripe for spring summer 2008 picking, I’ll also be going triangular with offerings from the likes of David David.  I’m not sure whether the positive reaction to his collection when I first posted it was because at the time, all things bright and printed were ‘so in’.  But for SS08, I still think a piece here or there contrasted with something sleek and sharp would work tremendously well.  I’m coveting the menswear slightly more than the womenswear but me thinks David David attire is good for unisex swapsies anyway.

Ioannis Dimitrousis also has some geometric unisex offerings that could clash happily with David David or perhaps with something that alludes to the direct influences of this collection.  Dimitrousis was apparently inspired by costumes of Mongolian warriors and Art Deco prints so a t-shirt or jacket mingling with something with more historical weight would be quite bizarrely interesting.  It’s a collection that in person is a lot more complex than what you derive from photos as there is careful juxaposition of materials, techniques and colours, as with Dimitrousis’ aesthetic.

Of course I’m not attributing Timmy Mallett as being the influencer of either of these designers.  I’m just sure that if he was still gracing our TV screens, some of this would surely take his fancy…

  3. no, don’t even worry about spotting THE trends for the season, what makes you good is that you don’t.
and I have just found another designer to watch, love geo!

  4. Love the over-all look in the first picture, it’s so unique! And the sky blue jeans are gorge. And since it’s not in every editorial page, ten thousand other girls won’t be wearing it at the same time!

  5. These prints are all very M.I.A circa her newest album Kala…
