Prom High Top

I’m not a sneaker freak by any stretch of imagination.  Save for my mild obsession with unusual Converse in my late teens which I grew out of because I then discovered that shoes elevated above the ground come in a mind bogglingly huge variety and from that point onwards, it was a slippery slide down to no man’s land between me and the trainer (sneakers for US-ers…. though I’m prone to use both words…).  Neither is my other half a sneaker freak on the sort of level who would queue up outside Stussy stores to get their mitts on so and so limited what nots.

Ergo, I’m not ‘down’ with the ins and outs of trainer/sneaker land.  However, Style Salvage pointed out the beauts that are the Lanvin satin high top trainers from the AW07 menswear collection and having seen them in person (not so much glancing at them as panting after them with my boyf outside the Lanvin store in Paris in a highly primitive fashion…), I must make an official demand to have these made in girl’s sizes.  In the context of the menswear collection, they are stylistic pivot points – as in the collision between smart and lux clash at one concentrated point.  However, the use of satin/silk in jewel bright blue and purple…. how could they not appeal to me?

Apparently, I’m not the only one who feels the same, as femmes in Paris have been buying up the smallest sizes to get some Lanvin hi-top action going (this is where womens size 8 feet might come in hand…. darn my ickle feet….!).  Skinny jeans, leggings would be have natural affinity with these trainers, however, I’m inclined to go down the ‘classic clash’ route of pairing them with matching coloured prom dresses.  It’s a slicker version of the prom dress/trainer combo that is now a not-so-indie style trick.

400 and something euros is excessive though in trainer/sneaker language and Gnarlitude’s newly acquired purple silk Vans Sk8-His does a pretty good job of hitting that luxurious trainer mark.  Alas, they are only available from Proper in Long Beach and since Lanvin aren’t going to pumping their trainers in a size 38, I’ll just have to shelve my temporary fascination with the juxtaposition of smart satin and casual high-tops.

  1. this is a super cute idea. the matchyness of it really puts a whole new spin on the sneakers-pretty dress combination!

  2. I tried finding these Lanvin’s after you mentioned them on my blog and so thank you for posting big photos of them! They’re great.
I wore my satin Vans out tonight and I’m totally in love with them. I knew Proper would sell out immediately so I just bought them off ebay. They were $85 in the shop and ebay had them for $200 which I could totally justify cause the price will just go up and up on there once they’re out long enough.

  3. don’t like matching the dress to the shoes. I’d prefer a different colored dress…
call me boring, but I’d prefer a simple black one in the shape of the brilliant blue numberrr…
    the sneaks are neat

  4. try the men’s Lanvin store in Hong Kong at IFC. i saw them there and they are now on sale!

  5. I think I’m in love….though the urge to reach down and stroke them constantly would be a difficult one to overcome 🙂

  6. I must have that. It’s too bad I don’t live anywhere near Long Beach to get those Proper Vans (that and the cost of gas would far outweigh the purpose of the trip)…

  7. haha, agree with the above poster. lanvin is gonna be the new dior homme, it already sorta is!
mannn, im not a sneaker freak either(im not boot freak), but yea, those lanvin satin hightops are awsome!
men sure do get some of the best boots… and sneakers around!

  8. Hey Susie, Check out the purple satin high tops at H&M. They didn’t have them in my size (big feet, Grrr!) but I bet they still have some left in yours.

  9. Jesus no, Sneakers and prom dresses a la Lily Allen, is the worst trend ever.

  10. hmm. not sure trainers and prom dresses can ever be worn together again, (even if the trainers are from lanvin) don’t blame me, blame a certain Ms Allen.

Our own Mr Sainsbury is up there fawning over the silky sneakers – like all good men should.
I am all for the idea of girl versions; though I think a close contender is a pair of gold ladies Commes des Garcon high tops.
or what about the Pierre Hardy sneakers?

  15. Even though these shoes probably glow in the dark. And even tough they won’t help you pass selection on high class clubs & bars, I will say this : they are just gorgeous! A weird middle ground between simplicity and over doing it.
