Iris Van Herpen created some wondrous creatures of fashion in her last collection but for AW08-9, the creatures have evolved, they have grown thin brass rods, meticulously aligned and bent to form something various organic structures around dresses. These are Herpen’s ‘Chemical Crows’ which quite literally took inspiration from a groups of crows that have nested outside Herpen’s studio. Their intelligence and ability to use tools impelled Herpen to create these structural ‘crows’ that are also combined with Herpen’s fascination with the dark forces of Medieval alchemists who had the ability to turn lead into gold. As I’m typing this, even I can’t quite believe the extraordinary breadth of Herpen’s inspirations. I also can’t quite believe the materials involved in this collection which when listed have a sort of dizzying effect; anthracite, black and beige feathers and gold coloured brass, together which take shape in designs that smack of isolated grandeur. If humans are ever going to take flight, let them be in Iris’ crow attire.
I somehow think the catwalk doesn’t quite do the designs justice…
These are breathtakingly, indescribably gorgeous designs! It makes me wonder, though – what happends to them after they leave the runway? Do they get sold? Given away? Who wears these clothes??
I agree about the designs not really working as well on the catwalk. Those shoes are amazing! A little difficult to walk in though?
The catwalk pieces are toned down but still wonderful, but the pictures are where they come to life. I love the inspiration behind her designs, it gives the whole story, and makes more sense.
The lighting is incredible, and lends an important quality to those photos.
I love it when people pour that much effort into design. The finished product bypasses mere “fashion” and extends into the “art” realm.
I;m astounded, these are – well, words won’t do this collection justice – I’m really excited about this designer. Is there anywhere else I can get more info…?

Omg that’s incredibly creative. The designs photograph amazingly. But I think you’re right, they’re suited better to editorials (etc) rather than catwalk.

The pieces do rather get washed-out on the catwalk. They are breath-taking when highlighted properly in those first images.
The runway doesn’t do those pieces justice, they seem a bit wash-out. They really shine when high-lighted nicely in the first few pictures.
