It’s not often you see fashion illustrations reflect a real woman’s body. You are more likely to see spindly legs that taper off into oblivion or a waist that has the circumference of a pencil. Hell, if real life human models don’t reflect reality why would a fashion illustration, something that’s created at the whim of the artist, fare any better?
I have been noticing the Japanese Mia Matsumoto’s illustrations for Justine Picardie’s column in Stella magazine (the style supplement for the Sunday Telegraph) for a while now and thought they were a bit different from the norm. They’re very pretty and girly whilst not alienating and looking ‘too’ fashion-y if you know what I mean.
Here are some of my favourites along with Picardie’s very funny articles!
Plain Beautiful // Art for Art’s Sake// Legging It // Transparent Reasoning
Tightening the Belt //Take to Your Heels // Shorts Shrift // Shine On // How do you like your T?

I love the illustrations – very different to any other fashion drawings out there. I’m going to print one out and put it on my desk! Thanks for all your interesting art/design articles 🙂
I just wrote about Justine Picardie too- I enjoy her columns a lot.
The illustrations for ‘Take to your Heels’, and ‘Shorts Shrift’ are my favourites.
Love these illustrations! They are darling & whimsical. Love your site too..
Yes exactly…I love the whimsicality of the illustrations. Very playful and somehow doesn’t take the fashion thing too seriously.
