I went on a bit of a crazy Japanese magazine splurge today with the help of a friend’s discount! As well as raking in the cool freebies (Hysteric Glamour hair clip anyone?) that come with the magazines, there’s also Japanese streetstyle pics galore! In the latest issue of teen magazine Cutie, they have given us the lowdown on the different trend tribes of Japan. Here we have catwalk trends of Europe and America being interpreted on the streets of Japan and it’s all crazily cool. I don’t read Japanese and there was very little kanji (Chinese characters) to guide me so I kind of just got the gist from the pictures.
Airy Fairies with an Edge – ethereal, innocent, chiffon, cartoon tinkerbells
Beatrix Potter Floralites – pastels, shabby chic interior fabrics, smocks
Complicated White Wearers – Details, cotton, floaty things with grit
British Punksters – Anarchy, plaids, destroyed denim, black in the summer
Children of the 80’s – bombers, electric pink, Culture Club styling
Underwear Vs. Denim – vintage underwear paired with tougher items // Modern Grunge – hoodies, grey cotton jersey, flat black boots
Overalls // Nautical
Folksy Hippies // Technicolour Rastafarians

I am so envious of the Japanese style…..they just where whatever they want and look absolutely crazy and amazing at the same time.

do most japanese girls dye their hair? i noticed all these girls had light blonde/brown hair.
also, thanks for the pics. great blog!
Anna: Thanks for the link…I have seen them before though…. style in China is improving vastly these days!
Fanny: I’m a Style Arena regular!
Anon: To some degree, most Japanese women dye their hair – be it a subtle dark brown or the orange/brown shades seen here. Bear in mind, these pics are taken in youth-centric areas in Tokyo or Osaka so are a little skewed and don’t represent Japanese women as a whole.
Thanks- great post.
Hi^^ I recently started reading your blog and I love it =) Keep up the good work.
The street style in Japan such as from cutie magazine actually isn’t that popular. Most girls here actually aspire to dress like Paris Hilton, Posh Beckham and Britany Spears or local celebs such as Koda Kumi and Namie Amuro.
But what they wear is always interesting to see^^
Mel: Thanks for the insight! Oh dear…. Posh/Britney wannabes?? IMO, even the Japanese women with plainer styles look impeccable. I think it’s the way they wear their clothes – they know how to mix it up.
