Margiela Hits Hong Kong

Trust Martin Margiela to forgo flashy modern mall space (of which there’s plenty in Hong Kong) and shiny, impressive streets to open his first store in Hong Kong.  Rather, he has chosen a run-down, old fashioned, colonial building (one of the few that exist in HK!) in the backstreets of Central, nestled amongst the skyscrapers.  A exposition avant travaux (exhibition before refurbishment) is being held at the site where the store will be, to "get the residents of the neighbourhood and Hong Kong to get to know us and our work".  It’s great that an exhibition is there to show the best of Margiela (tabi toe shoes, gowns made of old wedding dresses etc.) but knowing HK’ers, it doesn’t take an exhibition to get their attention.  Just mention ‘new store opening’ and the name ‘Margiela’ and they’ll come flocking like crazy.  I predict HK trendy pandemonium when the store opens in July.  Seeing as I won’t be going back until late August, hopefully the fervor would have died down, and I’ll be able to enjoy an alternatively located stylish store without too much trouble.

  1. Yeah… I know I don’t really go for posting breaking fashion news (I’ll leave that to blogs who are good at that!) but I just had to comment on this one…. I think ppl from HK will know what I’m talking about when they see the word ‘fervent wealthy residents’.
