Have you ever bought something and thought it was the best thing since sliced bread when you were in the store but then nestled with the rest of your wardrobe, it suddenly seems out of place and then you berate yourself for getting it so wrong? I don’t make this mistake too often because I consider my purchases pretty carefully and even if it’s a little off, I’ll try and make it work anyway. However, I can’t for the life of me explain this clanger hanging in the back of my wardrobe which I came across today as I was tidying up. It’s a Tsumori Chisato dress I bought for HKD500 (USD64) in the I.T. sale shop in Hong Kong last summer – a purchase either induced by the delirious stupor, caused by the heat or it was my "friend" who egged me on. Well, the pics say it all really – orange vertical stripes, and a bizarre purple and black blotchy pattern topped off by the fact it’s made of an unforgiving satin. I’m all for wardrobe oddities and quirks but this one’s just a little TOO hard to pull off. So what to do…. bin it? Sell it, but more to the point, who’d want it? Keep it hanging in my wardrobe to be there as a constant reminder to myself not to be swayed by pattern-clashing loving friends? Or keep faith that one day, I shall actually debut this dress out into the world in all it’s loud, brash "beauty"?

Oh shoot, I think that one’s just a dud Susie! Triple prints, oh my, that’s way out of my comfort zone… you could pull it off if it fit nicer but I don’t think it works even on you.
I almost think you could wear it as a jumper, with long sleeved T underneath and tights? Maybe taking out the center panel of fabric?
keep it ! wear it at home.
I actually think it looks awesome on you…just my opinion.
what are you on about?! it looks stunning on you! it might be out of your ordinary but isn’t changing it up a bit a good thing? xx
Are those smiley faces on the blue splotches? It’s sorta cute, but the satin red and white stripes are quite challenging. But is it hopeless? I sorta feel like if anyone can “fix” this dress with a creative solution, it’s you! (Plus I’m sure readers more fashionable than me might have some nifty suggestions as well.)
^Yes, those would be a weird woman face pattern around my bust area….
Oooh…a rather mixed reaction here. It’s not that the dress is completely weird and bizarro – I have odder things in my wardrobe. It’s the overall combination of it all that in the back of my mind must work on some level but in reality falls a little flat.
It’s oddly cute but would be even cuter if the skirt were made into a peplum. [This would also make the satin a bit more forgiving.] : )
Wear it with a t-shirt underneath the miu miu way and I think it will look really cute..
Oh, the dress is kinda cute…i actually like all those mismatched prints. I agree with Hilda, a t shirt underneath might make it work. And being my crazy self, I’d also wear it with some coloured tights (though with no pattern and in just one complementing colour)
I quite like it to be honest, suze. And purple and orange is not that odd of a color combo. I say keep it, I alway regret throwing things out or giving them away. I wouldn’t worry about the satin issue as you’re so slender. But if you’re dead set against it as is, I would cut off the skirt and convert the top bit into an actual top.
I say keep it too. You’d probably get rid of it and then a great way to wear it would occur to you, for awful would that be?!
In my opinion it’s pretty cute, but if you haven’t worn it all this time and feel uncomfortable even trying it on now, then there’s no use keeping it. I’m quite certain somebody would buy it off you.
I actually really like it. It’s really quirky and unusual. Yeah, it may be really really bold, but I agree with Hilda and say put a t-shirt underneath it. It would look way cute.
Rofl! Can’t stop laughing
Ok…I guess this one’s a keeper…but only in the back of the wardrobe, comes out once every 2 yrs or so kind of way. Thanks for the tips guys!
I actually really like it^^
i love tsumori stuff! its totally potty but so whimsical.
i would shorten it and wear it as a top, myself
I really like the dress!! The only downside is the satin fabric that hugs relentlessly to every little curve. More motivation to diet hah.
juz keep it…
i like the top, i do think the strips around the hip area would be tough for anyone…maybe cover that part with a skirt.
it is very awesome though.
