When I grow old, it could go a variety of ways. I could become wealthier and acquire a middle class taste for Brora sweaters and tailored suits from Joseph. I could go avante-gardish and buy tasteful clothes from Yohji Yamamoto in nice muted greys and navys, accessorised with silver artsy jewellery. I could grow old in Shanghai Tang loose jackets and suits whilst sipping green tea on my porch. I could lose my job and end up destitute and alone, resorting to buying Primark clothes until I die. Or I could completely lose my mind and become the crazy lady who goes through people’s bins wearing outfits like these…..
This editorial ‘Compulsive Love’ (Ph: Jean Francois Aloisi, Stylist: Donatien Veismann) comes from a new magazine called Issue One and the theme for it’s inaugural issue was Kinky. FAD was going on about it and quite rightly so, as the issue is set to become a collectors item so if you see it, nab it whilst you can! The cover features a Chanel-bound Hannelore Knuts. The editorials are also similarly quite provacative and odd and if you’re a fan of Guy Bourdin, you’ll love this!
From this editorial however, I think I may have glimpsed into my fashion future as a reclusive Edith Bouvier Beale (Grey Gardens) type character living in a house full of cats, hats, fur coats and costume jewellery.

yes, for those of you who have not seen grey gardens yet, it is a must. very whacky and almost hard to believe. on the dvd they also include interviews and show how it has been inspirational in fashion, I cannot remember who recently channeled Edie in their collection, Jeffrey Chow?? So, I’ll keep my eye out for you sporting a dishtowel held together with a brooch on your head…
“Edie’s fandom is based on more than just her psychological appeal. She is also a fashion icon. To coincide with Grey Gardens’ re-release in 1998, Harper’s Bazaar displayed a nine-page spread of fashion photos inspired by Edie. A year later, Italian Vogue followed suit, devoting twenty pages to a spread of LE-inspired photos by noted photographer Stephen Meisel. [4] These fashion spreads are evidence of Edie’s following within the fashion community. Grey Gardens is popular among many notable fashion designers including John Bartlett, Todd Oldham, and Calvin Klein, and it is possible to see Edie’s influence on their haute-couture collections. In fact, on the Grey Gardens DVD, Bartlett credits Edie’s blue head towel/brown dress concoction as being the inspiration for one of his Fall 2000 designs.”
Susie, did you know that you’re in the Sept. issue of Teen Vogue? 🙂
There’s a group of old ladies here who have formed a club and I’m not exactly clear on what it is they do but it’s a rule that they all have to wear purple and red outfits together , I see them every so often all wearing purple hats or red hats with purple suits etc Either way I think they’re really cool !
Jill, thanks for the good overview on Edie’s fashion influence! I’m so glad I forked out the dosh for that DVD – I love re-watching it!
TheDailyObsession: Yes I did know! Posted the scan a week ago!
Ruth: Wow….I wonder what they meet up to do! Maybe it’s a colour-clashing appreciation society!
I think that is the read hat society.
When I get old, I am going to wear leopard gloves! I’m not kidding. That lady in the top right is rocking that look. 🙂
I think they are members of the red hat society http://www.redhatsociety.com/ , I’m a bit disappointed now I thought they were a group of eccentric friends unique to Adelaide.
