Bags before they become bags

Before an ‘it’ bag goes into production and goes through the whole press shebang, it has to pass through a humbler stage – that of the mock-up made of calico and paper.  The dummies of luxury big brand accessories.  Now it could be the four white wine spritzers that I’ve consumed talking, but is it me or are these prototypes realy appealling?  The way they look a little unfinished, deconstructed and the neutrality of the calico?

  1. i totally agree! i love the look of unfinished, worn accessories…and a fabulous design is a fabulous design. expensive or not

  3. weird. i was just telling my friend Jaime tonight about this woman who would take apart IT bags (ie the balenciaga le dix motorcycle bag) make a pattern from it and then reconstruct them in canvas. i think Nylon did an article about her a while back or something. Wish i knew her name to tell you.

  4. Yeah, there really is something kinda endearing about those bags. I actually really like bags made out of a simple, neutral fabric because I think it really makes you focus on the design of the bag.

  5. Yup, I had a “Birkin” from Slow and Steady Wins the Race. Unfortunately, it’s pretty rotten-looking now due to heavy usage… But that was such a great idea – the Balenciaga motorcycle and Chanel quilted were good too.

  6. meg: The person on PITNB who I think you’re talkinga bout is NOT me – just someone who vaguely looks like me… it would be quite the geographical feat if I was in New York and London at the same time!
Lynda: I’m glad you like the blog! Email me if you wanna discuss anything!
Kat: Ah…I now remember those bags being featured in Nylon – too bad they’re not stocked outside America…..

  7. i should try taking apart a bag and reconstructing it again (with other materials) sometime… the finished product might turn out rather lovely; i am also particularly drawn to the unfinished bag on the right…xxoo

  8. hey, if you happen to be in NYC Mary is doing a pop-up store for Slow and Steady Wins the Race from Sept 10-17, 11 AM-7 PM. The bags are there along with all the rest of collections she’s done for the line…it’s at 133 eldridge, btwn broome and delancey.
ps. you have a great blog–keep it up!
    xo beverly
